How are y’all spreading yourself out in the fediverse so far? Right now I’m just browsing the front page of kbin and occasionally check in on my feed in mastodon, but I’m yet to find my “niche” communities.

I like kbin a lot already too. I like the highly functional feel. It’s close enough to Reddit that I hope it draws in more users. I found it a lot more approachable than Mastodon, and “Lemmy” just doesn’t have a nice ring to it IMO.

          and “Lemmy”

Also, communists or whatever. Not that I care if people have a particular ideology. But, I just want to shoot the shit about shit. Not get dragged into propagating someone’s manifesto or political treatise.

I think this point has been overexaggerated a bit. Sure, the main devs might support the CCP and actively try to silence critisicm about it, but the software is open source and decentralised for exactly this purpose. Anyone can fork it and host it themselves, and users can use any other instance which allows free speech with practically no difference in user experience.

I think both Kbin and Lemmy are great software, I am using both hoping that at least one of the two ends up becoming popular

Well this ernest dude seems like he’s reacting quickly to criticisms. The NSFW posts were showing full pictures and there was a complaint to have the preview blurred out. Took less than 12 hours for him to implement that so that’s a plus

I’ve made accounts on lemmy.ml, lemmy.ca, requested beehaw.org, and here, but probably going to stick with here for UI reasons plus I like the microblogs for things that don’t exactly warrant a post. The Mastodon integration is neat, but I doubt I’ll really use it since I never used Mastodon before.

Probably going to stick around here and Tildes (though that’s not the fediverse). Subscribed to a bunch of communities in the various lemmy instances before federation was took down for a bit, so hopefully one niche community grows there. Made one of my own for a relatively niche game I play (it’s a decently popular game, but it’s definitely niche).

What do you mean federation was taken down for Lemmy? I haven’t noticed that.

        EDIT:

Also wanted to point out that you can sub and communicate and create posts on beehaw.org posts from your lemmy.ml or lemmy.ca accounts. It is clunky, but you just have to go to search page (top right) from your account’s home instance, change the type from ‘All’ to ‘Community’ and search for the remote community using their format for searching communities (i.e.: !technology@beehaw.org). The search usually returns nothing on the first search if your instance updates it’s federated info with the remote instance or there are network errors. So just clear the search and try ‘technology’ and I have found that returns it.

KBins search function is a lot better. I have found a lot of other bugs on Lemmy, but you can work around them.

You can also sub to those lemmy communities from here. but that is a bit more in development than the lemmy to lemmy instance communication.

As part of the DDoS protection, kbin’s currently not federated as to not get more traffic from other places in the fediverse. I believe you can still see lemmy communities and subscribe to them, but there’s not really much there currently because kbin’s not federating.

I’m completely new to the whole fediverse thing though, so I could be talking out of my ass regarding why it’s not federating.

Already been here in Fediverse for a while (with Mastodon), but kbin is Vulcan’s first link aggregation platform in the fediverse.

Bumpy start was to be expected but so far a very enjoyable experience, also contributed content to magazines.

I think it’ll take a little while but we’ll find our niches. I’m finding a few magazines on kbin.social to be really active in and I also got on mastodon.social. I don’t think the latter is for me. I need to figure out a little better how federation works then I’m gonna explore more.

I’m struggling to find content. I saw some news about a sports team I follow, Xbox game, or show I’m watching- I would typically go to reddit, easily find a sub, and all of the content and comments I want. Now when I look on kbin or lemmy or beehaw ( I don’t even know the difference), I could be in an instance? where there is isn’t Xbox content but maybe another instance has tons of content. It’s a bit confusing.

Yeah, when you joined a reddit community after the 2010s, most of the popular ones would have some posts as a backlog to jump into. Only very rarely would you get a niche sub that hadn’t had anything posted that week. Kbin’s really just getting started and it’ll take a little while for things to fill out, but I have a lot of hope! The cat and dog photos are starting to roll in already, amyfou is posting regularly to /m/dogs! /m/food has photos and a discussion about cake!

Like another user mentioned- content across the fediverse isn’t federating with kbin.social except in a very limited capacity. This is temporary.

https://fedia.io/ is another instance of kbin which has a much smaller local population but is federating much more than kbin.social at the moment. You can see posts from lemmy on the front page.

I am still getting my head around this fediverse concept. I know of lemmy and I am here at kbin because I heard that kbin is one of the larger communities, but now you are saying fedia.io “is federating much more”? Does that equal to more content from other sources?

Maybe I’m still thinking in reddit-terms. Fuck, I miss my Baconreader.

You’re pretty much right. I am on Fedia as well, just because I’m exploring. It’s been difficult to go past the concept stage in my head while here, simply because it’s currently limited due to the growth and cloud flare hindrance (this is, from what I’ve seen, is partly causing the federation issues). At Fedia, I’ve been able to sort of practice the platform. It is federated with lemmy and other instances, so you get the access to other “subs” and the users there as well. If/when the platforms get sorted, and I’m able to fully vet the instances to see where I fit better, I’ll make a commitment. As it stands, I’ll just swap back and forth as needed and keep exploring.

I highly recommend checking Fedia, if not just to become more acquainted on how this all meshes together!

part of the issue is that kbin has been hit by so much traffic that they’ve activated cloud flare to protect it, which I understand is causing content from other parts of the fediverse to not come in at times. There may be more content here than you are able to access at this exact moment due to the technical issues of growing several orders of magnitude in size.

Mastodon is kind of a slow rolling thing. I’ve been on Universeodon for a few months now and I feel like I’m finally getting a good set of accounts to follow that show me what I want to see. But it’s not going to replace what I really went to Reddit for.

Jeez, I’m on kbin.social, ramblinreaders (bookwyrm), pixelfed.social, and dmv.community (mastodon). So far I have persuaded 0.0 of my Instagram and Facebook friends to move to ActivityPub instances. :-( Might just be me. I’ve stopped posting on the facebook except for a quarterly post about Mastodon and I deleted my Twitter. I don’t know how fast Insta will reach terminal enshittification, but it seems to be holding on.

One of my biggest challenges is getting the ‘front page’ to fill up with the kind of thing I’d get on r/all. I think at the moment it only shows posts from the subs I subscribe to. But I can easily see how Kbin could replace Reddit (im not going back).

The reason it seems like that is because this kbin instance (kbin.social) isn’t federated right now because of heavy traffic. So you’ll only see magazines that were created here. As soon as the restrictions are relaxed you’ll see other instances in the default feed. Or you could sign up for a different kbin instance like fedia.io which are currently still federated.

Even so, the other instances that are working as intended don’t quite have that r/all feel yet just because there aren’t nearly the same number of users in all of the fediverse as there were on reddit. It’ll take time for the content to catch up.
