Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has signed a measure to ensure President Joe Biden will appear on the state ballot in November.

DeWine, a Republican, signed the measure — which relaxes a state candidate filing deadline — Sunday along with a related bill that imposes a ban on foreign nationals contributing to state ballot campaigns. Both will take effect Aug. 31.

The Republican-dominated Legislature had approved the two measures last week during a rare special session. The contribution ban had been demanded by the Senate, which approved the measures Friday, a day after the House passed them.

    Ohioan here.

This came at the consequence of a nebulous “anti foreign funding” bill for ballot issues. Sounds harmless but 1) we already have laws against this and 2) republicans’ story around the abortion amendment that passed last year is that it was funded mostly by out of state entities, so we know that’s a card they want to play with more force.

Mike Dewine is a republican but is truly prolly the most moderate guy I’ve seen on that side of the aisle. He did a really good job of handling covid here, and other than the usual republican stances on weed or abortion, he’s generally likable.

That said, our republican legislature is not likable. They fought tooth and nail to keep from even having to make this decision, and when they finally did, they had to do it on their own terms.

      He absolutely didn’t.

He did at first, but the moment the kickback started from his party and Trump, he folded, like the spineless worm he is.

That’s just an example of how far right the republican party has gone. Dewine used to be considered more right than the rest of his party. He had pushed for a heartbeat bill forever and was never considered a moderate. But because of how bat shit insane the Republican party in Ohio has gotten he seems moderate compared to the rest.

In reality though, it’s just that he’s one of the last Adults left in the room. So even small things like this, which have been done for democrats and republicans in past years, makes him seem moderate. trust me though, while he might respect the rule of law and believe in democracy a moderate it doesn’t make him.
