      Also, folks can use a BLE monitoring app to check for planted AirTags as a matter of personal security.

        I was thinking correlating time received and signal power to for a whole group of devices moving together. MAC should lead directly back to purchaser in many cases.

          Yep, they might be easy to spoof but nobody bothers doing that. So any BLE or BT gear made by a police equipment manufacturer is very reliably broadcasting the presence of cops to anyone that might be listening. With a good antenna and an unobstructed line of sight, these signals can be detected from hundreds of yards away.
