I’m assuming kettle is different in the US to UK. Here it’s used to boil water for a cup of tea. You’d never make popcorn in it.

I think most people in the US would use the word kettle to refer to a tea kettle, at least in the regions where I’ve lived. The only reason I’d relate kettle and popcorn is because there is a sweet and salty variety called kettle corn. It’s a bit of an old fashioned thing and might be pretty US centric, though.
