Such a dumb entitled white person set of assumptions being made here:

My door dasher will be from a white Christian culture, so will know Christmas songs.

My door dasher enjoys their job so much they’ll surely enjoy my extra chatter and my hilarious banter!

Mother fucker, your door dasher working Christmas is probably a hindu guy who has no clue what you’re on about. Hence the answer they gave.

Dude I make cultural references all the time. I don’t really give a shit if the recipient gets it 100% of the time. A 20% hit rate is enough for me, because it’s amusing when a stranger picks up on my reference to The Office or Arrested Development or I Think You Should Leave or whatever. And if my reference misses, whatever. I’m just having fun with my interactions with others. If they have fun, too, great. If not, too bad, I was still entertained myself.

This is the type of shit that needs to die as we approach “Woke 2.0” as leftist ideas are gaining momentum again. It’s so fucking unhelpful and useless. Glad you’re being downvoted.

I want healthcare, affordable housing, and BOTH of the people on this app to be paid a wage that allows them to thrive from their labor.

This person attempted to make a joke and failed. That’s it. You don’t need to say this shit. It doesn’t help anyone but yourself. I don’t care if every white person is cringe. I care that every worker is able to thrive. You need to purge this radlib shit from your brain.

It’s like if someone attempted to make a joke related to Star Wars and it failed. A lot of people know Star Wars. But a lot of people don’t. That is all this is the equivalent of. Stop trying to white knight every conversation. People can’t stand you. Seriously. Rethink what purpose you’re actually serving with this type of criticism.

Oh yeah, no one ever got popular or suddenly culturally relevant arguing about this shit. My comment isn’t the mkst replied to here. It’s best if there’s no debate on Lemmy, arguing doesn’t drive people to interact. No Lemmy should be a place of quiet and empty agreement or reflection.

Good job being the most correct on the Internet.

Your answer to what I said is that people got popular being radlibs on the internet?

Like, this is what lack of reading does to a mother fucker. When I asked you to reflect on what purpose your commentary actually serves all you could think about was individuals getting popular? That says a lot. Just hyper individualistic world view.

I wasnt stopping debate. We are literally discussing it right now. I was telling you you’re comments were useless and borderline harmful to any momentum to a leftward shift.

You seem more concerned about woke scolding people than actually looking to make improvements in material change for the groups you supposedly are defending here.

Again, absolute radlib substanceless dribble. I think you’re beyond helping. But I’m glad to see people aren’t falling for this bullshit anymore. You’re not a leftist. You’re a right winger. I hope you can understand that.

Your approach would have you assume this potential brown person doesn’t understand cultural norms therefore you must treat them differently than you’d treat others due to their ethnicity. That doesnt sound very inclusive to me.

I’ve paid a tech company to get an underpaid worker to bring me fast food on Christmas… In what fucking mad universe is that about inclusion?

Your comment comes down to “But they will love my witty banter and extra time on their phone”.

        …Congrats.

Shitty jobs are worked by all kinds of people, and all of those kinds of people I’ve met while working shitty jobs appreciate a good laugh and break from the monotony of the shitty job.

I like how in the face of literally everyone you’ve interacted with telling you that you’re wrong and confirming it, you’ve decided tripling down is still the play.

Never change, friend, it will work eventually.

They’re making a cultural reference to (most likely) the culture of the place they’re both living in. It’s fair game.

Not defending the other dude but how is the driver making a cultural reference?

Not the Dasher, that’s cause they work for DoorDash and that’s what the company likes to call them.

Yeah, I just meant the recipient was making a cultural reference. The comment that I replied to complained about a white person making a comment specific to their own culture. Ironically, the person who wrote that comment was arguably being more culturally insensitive by assuming that the DoorDasher wouldn’t understand a cultural reference

Yeah, I can’t wait until questions about Rudolf and the One horse open sleigh are on the citizenship test (everyone knkws that just by living here right?)… Who knows, maybe you’re right and that question is already on the citizenship test?

You don’t need to know cultural trivia to become a citizen. Especially not all of it. But when a person is living somewhere (which you don’t need to be a citizen to do), that person tends to be exposed to the culture.

As well, this could just be someone familiar with the culture who missed a pun because they’re thinking about work.

I’m not sure what caused you to get so worked up about this. The joke is perfectly reasonable to make, and there’s the chance that the Dasher learned a bit of cultural trivia thanks to this joke. Or they learned that they missed a pun and may get to have a laugh about it in hindsight. There’s no harm or foul here.

I’m sorry that this is how you’re choosing to spend your Christmas. Or your Boxing Day as the case may be.

If you don’t celebrate those, I’m still sorry that you’re choosing to spend your time this way.

You’re missing the whole plot, it doesn’t have to always be an argument. It could be just a conversation, and people can enjoy things.

Your baseline assumption here is that interaction with another person is burdensome. Most people don’t feel that way, and if they do, they probably don’t work in the service industry.

So, presuming the doordasher finds human interaction to be neutral (neither good nor bad), and understanding that the customer is not making the joke at the expenses of the door dasher, I fail to see how this is a problem, even if the dasher doesn’t get it. Someone trying to share a joke with you, even if you don’t get it, is usually perceived as friendly.
