Skill issue
I stopped using Windows because I needed an OS that I could just use and not have to futz with.
Fedora has done that perfectly for over a decade now.
Plus the ability to run Linux off of bootable flash drives let’s you figure out any driver issues BEFORE fully taking the plunge.
Fedora with Gnome has been rock stable for me! Also Zorin and Debian.
All of the issues that are described here are caused by proprietary tech that linux devs are forced to reverse engineer, so ofc not everything is going to work right off the bat. If you really care that much about a fingerprint scanner then, yeah, stick with windows and enjoy it. Good luck with that too.
I came here to say this. One guy’s experience using some proprietary shit box (the Dell) shouldn’t be representative of everyone’s experience. It’s not fair that Linux developers have to reverse engineer these drivers then get shit on for it down the road.
I run Manjaro on a 2010ish Dell XPS 15 without a single issue. Haven’t used it in a while, because I got a 2012 MBP that was lighter to carry and put Kubuntu on that, but last time I used the XPS it was fine.
This is less an issue of proprietary hardware and more user competence IMO
I know that many of us have had success for a long time on linux, but this is a tech reporter, so they’re more tech-savvy than the average bear, and they’re referencing very real and concrete usability issues they had genuinely trying to use linux. I’m not sure downvotes and ridicule are the best position for us to take, here, if we’re looking to convince folks to make the switch.
Whether or not this particular person should know better, migrating to Linux is unlikely to be a seamless transition for most people in the real world. I think the article emphasized the problem and understated the benefits. Let’s just not pretend there aren’t compromises to be made, even if they are reasonable ones.
I have to use a Windows machine for work. I use both Windows and Linux for personal use. And I still miss OS/2. :-)

I suspect we agree on the tech skills of the average tech reporter, but I have a lower estimation of the technical skills of the average person.
They’re a “tech reporter” in the sense that they write puff pieces about Spotify, etc.
I don’t agree, tech reporter who depends on certain tech for his job will continue advocating for that tech because it’s how he gets paid. Tech savvy my arse.

They do it for free for a variety of reasons.

Not even that, he depends on their system so won’t leave it. His job depends on their software so he is tied to it and won’t make any real effort to get away from it.
I’m not entirely sure this is true? If everyone migrated to Linux, tech publications like the verge would become more important, not less, because they wouldn’t have the company that publishes the software to compete with for page views.
Tech reporter… Going back. As in not their first dip. As a tech reporter, they should have known better the first time. That the took a second stab still not knowing. Really makes one question their credentials.
If you’re that base of a user, that you don’t understand that going in. It isn’t a software problem. It’s PEBKAC. And no one should ever recommend a person of that low skill ever try to install on their own. If you want everything to work, buy a system made to run the software. System 76, tuxedo, etc.
Would it be nice if opensouce devs could make some of the most proprietary, custom hardware designed to only work with windows run under Linux? Sure, is it a flaw of Linux that it doesn’t? No. Not unless it’s a flaw of Windows that Microsoft doesn’t support modern apple hardware.

Using an OS is like being at an airport. We don’t need to be made aware of anyone’s departure or arrival.
It doesn’t sound like they ever left the linux airport though. It sounds like they left a totally dysfunctional, useless airport (window), then decided to complain about a better, functional airport which has a few glitches (for him). But they don’t go back to airport hell/windows. This article might be stupid but it’s not that stupid.
