Wow, I used to dream of visiting India. The history and culture are fascinating.

These days, though… not sure I would make it out alive. To make matters worse, I’m Canadian. The fuck is going on over there?

Nothing has changed, it’s just no longer seen as a harmless country. It’s basically going through an accelerated version of China’s transition in the media circa 2015 to today: instead of reporting about the good things, only report on the bad things.

Assaults and mob lynchings, mainly of Muslims, have been rising in India since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in 2014. The government denies the allegation.

Hindu nationalists are fascists. Call them what they are.

According to the neighbours, Ishaq was mentally challenged. “He was a simple boy who did not bring any harm to anyone,” autorickshaw driver Mohammad Saleem, who lives in the same lane, told Al Jazeera.

So a kid with down syndrome or something picked up a banana off the ground and people literally beat him to death because of it. Well, mostly because he was doung the “eating while Muslim” thing)

I couldn’t find any other source of this news other than this website. Could someone point me to another source? This article was unclear on the date when this happened.

So guys, not saying this was right, murder is wrong in almost all scenarios. That being said I feel like no one in this thread actually read the article, he didn’t just eat a banana. He took a banana that was give as a ritualistic offering to a Hindu deity. Didn’t deserve death, but if the accusation is true he had to have expected some serious consequences.

Like come on, if this was an article about a Muslim community beating the shit out of someone for throwing bacon at a mosque, we’d all probably have a different reaction. Murder was too far, but you can’t spit in the face of someone’s religion or culture and expect nothing to happen.

      murder is wrong

      BUT…

There’s no buts on this one. Hindu food offerings are intended to be eaten by attendees. This is just a nationalist hate crime with a thin veneer of religion as pretext.

    • Wajid, who sells vegetables in a pushcart, said his Hindu customers often offer him the prasad and he accepts it without a second thought. “Prasad is a gift from bhagwan or Allah. I do not refuse it.”

Yeah, I feel like the same people who initially offer ‘prasad’ (food offerings to the Gods) and later beat him to death probably gave mixed messages to him…

Humor me, what reaction do you think we’d have here?

      No?

Well, “beating the shit out of” vs “killing” are still two different things…

Prasad is offered to the gods to symbolically consume but then it’s given to people to actually consume. You’re not supposed to say no. People even sometimes carry prasad across the country and world so they can give it to others to eat.

Idk why any reasonable Hindu would get angry at someone eating prasad, regardless of who they are.
