Reddit improved their anti-ban evasion system, cuz it’s the sixth or more failed attempt at evading a permanent ban. Never more, I am staying here.

FUCK YOU, SPEZ!

Ugh. So much to unpack here.

First off, you have to act like a massive shit-loaf to get perma’ed from Reddit in the first place. Now you’re declaring your love for this community because you can’t get back into Reddit.

    Welcome, I guess.

Right. More often than not when these posts pop up you can check their comment history and see exactly why they keep getting banned.

In a lot of cases, yes. Not in all of them, due to bot-based bans.

Kind of funny that you mentioned fascists - my first permaban there was from telling Nazist to shoot himself like Hitler did. (10/10 experience, would get banned again.)

On-topic: I believe that abuse of the report function to get people banned is already a reality there for years. Not just from fascists; the typical Reddit user is petty, and I do think that the so-called voting brigades also abuse the report function.

I don’t even blame it for the ban itself, to be honest. The person in question was trash, but it’s simply easier to enforce a rule like “don’t goad suicide” than one like “don’t goad suicide, unless the person in question is a piece of shit”, and the later opens some awkward precedents. I do blame it for 1) the gaslighting in the ban message (“multiple violations” my arse, it was one violation) and 2) banning 3/4 of my accounts - and the exception being the acc that I used for mod duties (“keep working for free, sucker”).

It’d be a real shame if fascists were abusing the harassment report on anyone that disagrees with them.

One of my accounts was permabanned because a fascist spammer who ran some “anti-fascist” branded political spam subs kept reporting me for harassment when I linked to their own content in other subs, and I got bored of constantly appealing. Also reddit got rid of all their big subreddits and main accounts eventually. They’re still on the site 24/7/365 on dozens of alts but they have a small audience now.

They were a semi-known personality on the site and had basically been banned from any sub they claimed to be politically aligned with, for self-promotion, being an asshole, etc. Had dozens of alts permabanned by reddit admins as well. Basically they had alts/personas that catered to different political views, like red pill content, liberal content, anti-fascist content, fascist pro-police content. They’d have alts with bios like “I’m a trans woman!” and “Go Zelenskyy! Slava Ukraine!” for whatever content they wanted to market to or identities they wanted to speak on behalf of. Oh and this was for profit, they had links to shitty self-published books and those websites where you can upload your designs, they sold shitty NFTs and comics. If you went to their book links there’d be 5 star reviews from people who only reviewed their books and suspicious stuff like that. The book’s publisher would have books with different pseudonyms of his name, books about how men are only nice to women for sex, next to a book about being liberal, etc. It was like generated spam targeted towards all sorts of trending political topics.

Who can say, right? The gears of Reddit are inscrutable.

That said, when you engage with an extremist, there’s always 20 other extremists looking at your replies and just waiting to report you if you say the slightest mean thing. They are mucilaginous troglodytes and one mustn’t extend to them the credence that they’re dealing in good faith.

It’s actually not too hard to get perma’d due to a handful of bullshit/nonsensical bans that just stack up over time. Also, they were VERY liberal with the permaban hammer around when they announced the API lockdown.

I got permabanned on Reddit (it got turned around because even the mods of the subreddit and of other subreddits said it was bullshit) for making a joke about wishing Indiana’s attorney general got punched in the face because he said something about something being a punch in the face. Like they banned me for jokingly wishing what he said happened to him metaphorically would just happen to him. Not saying someone should do it, certainly not saying I would do it, just wishing that it would happen. Permaban from all of Reddit for a joke that didn’t actually call for violence and was clearly just referencing the post’s headline.

      Incorrect

I got banned by a bot because I went into an antivax subreddit to question them. The fact I posted on a “forbidden” subreddit got me auto banned by about a dozen subreddits, instantly. There was NO attempt to check the comment for context. Then I forgot I was banned by one of them and months later posted with another account and got permabanned for ban evasion. A 10 yr account down the drain.

My partner doesn’t use reddit and hasn’t used lemmy. She was permabanned despite not commenting or posting for about 6 months. The comments that were there were just asking questions about video games.

No reason or explanation was given. The only recent behaviour was subscribing to a trans-supportive community. We figure that might have pissed off an admin somehow. That’s the only activity that she did during those 6 months. If either of us should have been banned, it should have been me, to be honest. We have different IPs, so there shouldn’t have been any confusion on who was who. My account stayed active, even though I admittedly wasn’t always friendly with people. Every account she made was also banned without reasoning.

I initially stopped using it because I thought that was dumb, then a few months later the whole API thing happened.

Best of luck to you, I hope you continue to have a better experience than we did lol.

I still don’t know why Reddit permabanned me. They never gave me a reason, and when I submitted an appeal asking why I got banned I got what looked like an auto-reply saying “upon careful consideration…etc etc” Did I act like a shit-loaf? Idk, maybe? But if so I’d think they’d be able to tell me specifically why I deserved it.

Y’indeed I love seeing notifications here and reload every few minutes to see if someone replied to me (not now obviously because I’m high and forgot to reply to you earlier and it’s also taking me a good few minutes to type up this reply).

On Reddit I usually hoped that everyone upvoted, of course, and that none of them reply. Especially when I argumented with someone, because I’m actually really bad at argumenting about things I perceive as negative. […]

The rest is just a stoned tirade (I didn’t want to delete it because I find it amusing), there’s no Tl;Dr to be made, just don’t read it unless you choose to make me a god and want to use the genoxidedev1 lore to practice that new religion. Anyways:

[…] I’m also bad at argumenting about things I’m good at, which only leaves me being good at argumenting about things I’m bad at, but I’f im good at argumenting about things I’m bad at it would mean that I’m good at argumenting about me argumenting about things I’m good at, so, if we use that logic for all the other things I could be doing I’m actually the best at everything. Wow. I just lost an argument against myself, cool or something.

I know that they were restoring deleted accounts, but I don’t think there’s any way for them to restore over written comments to previous versions, so overwritten comments are probably more important than actually deleting the account, although you can delete it after you overwrite everything.

Nothing is ever deleted from Reddit and edits are stored. Deleting it doesn’t actually delete it, it just marks it as deleted.

This is information coming directly from Reddit devs/admins over the years.

Can you link to evidence of comments being timestamped, restored or archived by reddit? I’ve read about both deletes being reversible and edits being stored, but I found no incontrovertible evidence for comment iterations being stored or recovered, although there seems to be a lot of anecdotal evidence for deleted accounts being easily restored by admins, which would make sense.

And the thing is Reddit doesn’t go straight for the perma. A user generally has to have a history of warnings and smaller bans first.

I know this doesn’t apply to all but it applies to many: I used to mod a sub that I made like 15 years ago and I have seen the worst behavior from people over the years - deranged people who feel they are the center of the world and behave in insane ways - they disappear after a small admin ban and when it’s over, they’ll come back even stupider and angrier. And the best, the best, the best and most predictable part is when they portray it as being banned over one thing. No, it was a banning for a pattern of being a heinous cretin.

From what we see in this very post and comments, it fits the archetype.

They started banning much more freely shortly before the whole 3P API fuckery - surely as another part of the IPO prep. I was getting banned for relatively innocuous comments, and would always get my account reactivated a week after appealing. My last appeal was accepted during the blackout, but I just never bothered to log back on …

And this place isn’t? I was banned for the following comment the other day:

Can’t find a single link to methodology or what the population was. Unless my Google is horrific I would take this with a grain of salt. Men are definitely overrepresented. However in my 15 years of experience working in the field I’ve seen maybe one overt case of sexism. I can count on one hand times where I’ve heard a “under the radar” type problematic statement that I’ve needed to address. I do not believe this data is representative of anything in the US or EU from my personal experiences.

        And

Good. This is a simple fucking trademark case and the union is going to lose hard. A first year JV could win this.

I even got one calling me genocidal but can’t see it. I would love to see what I said that was genocidal lol.

I once posted a theory that Deckard HAD to be a replicant because of the way genetics actually works (him having a child in 2049 proves it, I mean).

A mod called my comment a “Luke warm take for piss brains” and removed it, so I told him to go fuck himself. Banned, not just from the sub, but from all of reddit.

Got banned for harassing mods because I was asking why I got banned automatically for participating in a different subreddit. As soon as I sent my second request asking why I was banned, I got permabanned.

Me too, they are far too quick to bring out the perma ban. My 10 year old account went from a minor subreddit ban (for asking why a mod banned someone else) to global perma ban within 12 hours. In fairness I reported the mod and said he’s a neckbeard but that shit isn’t worth of global perma lol.

Overall, I think this is good news for lemmys future tbh

I got banned by a bot because I went into an antivax subreddit to question them. The fact I posted on a “forbidden” subreddit got me auto banned by about a dozen subreddits, instantly. Then I forgot I was banned by one of them and months later posted with another account and got permabanned for ban evasion.

      Fuck reddit, petty tyrants.

Absolutely killing me right now to watch what’s going on in /r/worldnews re: the Gaza Strip. Absolute echo chamber of reposted IDF propaganda, genocidal rhetoric against Palestinians - all calls for peace, any contextualization or describing the history of the conflict get permabanned and muted, appeals to admins are denied as usual. Meanwhile, international observers describing the situation as an ongoing genocide. What do you call censoring a community to support that, besides “incitement to genocide”?

Site should be forever abandoned, they have lost every last shred of credibility.

Start your niche community on lemmy then advertise it in some other groups. You might be surprised how much better it is here.

I still have a bunch of accounts but it’s actually not a friendly site to use. I remember telling friends about it back in the day and they’d try and use the site, then they’d come back and be like “everyone on that site is an asshole.” I’d explain it in some dumb way but it’s basically true in essence. I even modded some default subs like 10 years ago and it was the first time I started hating the site.

Even hobby subs had these issues. Like the top post in r/synthesizers would be about some youtube personality and people debating about drama. People who post actual music and productive things don’t get upvoted. Saying you liked the “wrong” people got you made fun of. Super trend/hype based as well. I posted asking for advice for a product to buy once, and was heavily discouraged from getting what I thought was the right thing, I got it anyway, and now it’s basically a meme as the top recommended product for that purpose on that sub.

Basically moved to forums and discord servers for a lot of interests and it’s so much better than reddit. Early 2010s was the golden age for the site back when there’d be those reddit meetups and stuff.

It’s also so fake, people performing the idea they’re successful at the hobby as a sort of feedback loop of validation. Posts about buying a thing or showing their stuff always gets more interest than someone engaging in the hobby, with the exception of influencer types or the upper echelon of aspiration.

Joining other communities… music and car related to be specific, I post a work in progress and get instant feedback and messages from people in the relevant scene to share their process etc. The influencers are in the mix with everyone else and are contributing things everyone can use.

I found it took about 3 months to get bored with a subreddit. That was about how long it took to see the same postings and comments cycling over and over.

I’m in the process of deleting my posts in a few accounts in preparation to delete them.

Reddit isn’t the same place it was when I first signed up. On so many levels it proceeded to get worse year after year. Shitty mods, paid political bot brigading to drown out discussion, general discourse devolution, innovation decline of generally loved features are some of my biggest complaints of that platform.

Don’t get me wrong reddit was always a bit of anarchy, but the best comments somehow managed to rise up. Not so much anymore. Maybe I’m just getting old and some of the comment contents don’t interest me in the same way it used to.

I don’t mind being part of this community even though some of the sub’s have less activity. The activity seems to be of a better quality for the most part imho.

For me I don’t miss reddit at all.

Maybe they wouldn’t have problem with ban evasion if they weren’t giving out bans the drop of a hat

Everything is being automated. The Admins are automated. The mods are increasingly automated. The subs are filled with botspam. The comments (have always been, but are now overwhelmingly) filled with bot-chatter.

The end goal of Reddit is to automate away anything that might cut into the company’s bottom line. I’m convinced they’re going to functionally do away with the comments section sooner or later. Just set up a byzantine set of bureaucratic hurdles that no human can actually clear. Then all that’s left is the bots, and all you are allowed to do is look through the glass at the simulation.

      That’s not exclusive to Reddit.

Looks at 196 here on Lemmy and their massive pissy baby ban list.

Edit: If you disagree, go look at the bans and their reasoning in the mod log. It’s insane, and I mean that word in the literal sense. Some fun things: they ban people for not agreeing with them vocally enough. They’ve banned people for arguing that the world isn’t beyond saving if we try. They’ve banned because (and I quote) “Get out of here with that my children matter shit”. It’s a lunatic brigade run by a clown.

They are something else. Think like TheDonald was on Reddit, but for trans people and memes.

My first exposure to them was a thread by a mod saying that you MUST post absolute and unconditional not just approval, but promotion of what they say politically or you will be banned. It was fucking wild and nearly put me off Lemmy altogether.

I spent about an hour and kept getting reply notifications, just like the one I got now for this (now over a month old) post. I reply. I like to interact. It’s not arguing, it was legitimate discussion, and yes, I was discussing how people like to strawman others. To my mind, it was civil.

The message I got from the mod was - nearly word for word - “get the fuck out of here with that my children matter bullshit.”

I did not misrepresent the situation.

As an addendum, the thread were I was banned was not my first exposure to them. You may be conflating two interactions.

They use browser fingerprinting. Not only do you need a new IP address, but you need to make your browser characteristics look sufficiently different from anything you’ve used before (including all metadata that your browser sends to Reddit.com like OS, time zone, CPU, GPU, etc). Otherwise they will re-associate you and ban your new account. It’s annoying as fuck.

I still have no idea what they banned me for. Spez is on record saying it’s fine to create a new account as long as you don’t repeat the behavior that got you banned, but their actions say no, you’re banned for life and there’s nothing you can do.

The effort required to get back on Reddit is just way to high for day to day usage, so I just stay on here mostly. I still read Reddit for niche stuff from time to time, but yeah it does suck to just read and never be allowed to comment.
