A hike in a ‘beer tax’ that could make brews more expensive for Canadians is again being considered by Ottawa after a delay earlier in the year.

Federal beer excise duties are set to increase by 4.7 per cent in April 2024, an increase that could make beer up to 20 cents more expensive for a case of 24, according to CJ Hélie, president of Beer Canada.

In other words, if you drink two beers a day, every single day, the total cost of your beer will go up about $6/year. If you’re so close to the edge already that that is going to tip you over, maybe you ought to cut the beer altogether.

Beer is already ridiculously expensive in Canada. As a dual citizen, I always load up in New York before crossing that border. Crazy that they want to hike it more.

It works to be less than a penny per beer. If you were a heavy drinker and had 4 beers every day it’s like a dollar more each month. As far as tax hikes go I wouldn’t worry much about this one

A pint at the pub in California was us$8-9 but here in BC it is ca$7.

Buying at the store is a bit more expensive than in California but not significantly when you do the conversion.

Given the cost-of-living struggles facing many Canadians, Hélie said many voiced their disapproval.

    I find this hilarious.

Anyone worried about the cost-of-living really shouldn’t be wasting money on drugs, alcohol, or smoking.

I wonder if beer retailers and producers will increase their prices in hopes of making a little more margin.

After all, it didn’t stop all sorts of companies sneaking above-inflation increases in under the guise of inflation.
