You should get a new battery. It’s quite easy to replace it on iPhone 3G/3GS. Also, for further questions it’s better to ask in r/LegacyJailbreak

I’m not sure where you live but in North America the majority of 3G towers are no longer operational.
But that still doesn’t explain why the phone doesn’t turn on completely and keeps fading out quickly or won’t hold a charge
Would help if 3G towers were in service.
Try a DFU Restore if you don’t care about the data that’s on it. Disclaimers, this will delete all data on the device.
Have you tried powering on with it still being plugged in?

Funny I came across this post, I just bought a 30 pin charging cable for an iPod I’m gonna fix and said might as well see if my old 3GS will turn on. Same thing happened, turned on when I connected it and now completely dead. New battery it is 👍🏾
