  • No joke, the first time I actually had socialism explained to me was in my college history class. Before that I had only heard of it in the negative contexts that you hear conservatives use it in. When the professor was done explaining it, I raised my hand and when called on, I said “Wait! That’s socialism? What’s wrong with that?!?”. The professor chuckled and then we spent the rest of the class time discussing socialist theory vs socialist implementation throughout history. He was an outstanding professor, who permanently changed my political outlook.

  • There’s also a lot of self-delusion, or lying to oneself. I suppose for some people it’s necessary to cope with their disabilities. I’ve seen deaf people say they wouldn’t accept hearing for all the money in the world, and that they’re not disabled, but rather differently abled. As someone who has gradually lost their hearing I’ll tell you that being hard of hearing is absolutely a disability in many ways, not just for communication. It seriously negatively impacts a person’s life. Having fewer senses than everyone else doesn’t make me differently abled, it makes me disabled, and I would give a whole lot to have normal hearing again.

  • Idk about the UK, but in the USA, there was ongoing debate to change our currency base to a bi-metal standard instead of just using the gold standard. The Wizard of Oz is supposedly all about that debate, and Dorothy’s slippers were originally silver, walking on the gold brick road. They changed the slippers to ruby for the movie to show off their new techni-color technology, and removed any references to the political debate.
