I am entirely unsurprised that people who hate systemd also hate wayland.

Then there’s accessibility functions, which wayland breaks almost by design by denying apps access to each other. Even something as simple as an on screen keyboard becomes nearly impossible to implement.

That’s a side effect of just dumping everything into X11, once you switch from it you lose all the random kitchen sink warts it grew over the years.

Like an on-screen keyboard shouldn’t be fiddling with a display protocol to fake keyboard inputs, it should be using the actual OS input layer to emulate them (So then it’d work with devices that read input directly and not go via X11). Same with accessibility, there’s a reason other OSs use separate communication channels with their own protocol.

So how the OS already catches links to e.g. YouTube and offers to open it directly in the app, it could also do that for apps that weren’t installed and it’d just download and run them automatically. One of the examples was Vimeo, instead of loading the website it’d download a cut down variant of the normal app and load the video in that instead.

The idea was to push people towards using apps instead, but now Google control the web they can just make that their app store instead, so native apps aren’t as relevant anymore.

The CPU usage spikes aren’t necessarily from React Native itself being particularly heavyweight, but rather from the fundamental architectural choice of running a web-based rendering engine for core system UI elements.

The likes of both Microsoft and Apple are openly hostile to such frameworks (QT and GTK come to mind).

Funny thing, the OneDrive client app that ships with Windows, uses Qt

React Native doesn’t render using a browser instance, it’s native code (as the name implies), it’s actually a layer over WinUI 3 (Previous versions used WPF/UWP)

So it’s in the same boat as MAUI, which is also a layer over WinUI 3.

Without more information I’m just guessing, but they’re probably running the whole thing on-device, the CPU in that phone should have hardware cryptography support (For AES), but even ChaCha is pretty efficient in software on chips like that.

Yeah, I think Windows actually handles it quite well, the actual filesystem has no notion of what the filenames are outside of basic “It’s UTF-16”, it’s the OS filesystem layer that handles all the quirks.

Because that’s what people seem to dismiss, there’s no one standard notion of case folding. It depends on the locale you’re using, and that shouldn’t be built into the FS itself. The classic one was the German “long S”, where “SS” should be case folded with “ß”, except they changed it in 2024 so now they shouldn’t match (“ß” becomes “ẞ” now), good luck updating your FS to support rules like that.

Now your shell? That’s easy, you can just warn the user that a “matching” filename already exists and prompt them to change it, and you can vary those warnings based on the locale, and you can push out updates as easily as any other patch.

I should have and honestly might have, been long enough that I don’t remember that aspect.

So in the same week back in 2013 I did 2 things.

1. Buy a Star Citizen package with the game and a ship with lifetime insurance
2. Buy a 3 pack of hand built laser pointers from a local online store

Now the price wasn’t exactly the same, but close enough that I considered them equal. A week after buying the laser pointers I get an email saying that parts were on back order and there’d be a delay.

A week after that, their entire online store presence vanished, and they stopped responding to emails about my order.

To this day I’m still more salty about the laser pointers, since at least RSI keep sending me emails with updates.
