I keep thinking we need an overhaul where volunteering to be a public servant at a high enough level also means volunteering to surrender all your assets and be barred from owning anything significant for life. You get a stipend that you can spend on food, hobbies, travel, and entertainment, but that’s it. You get housing and transportation paid for (or maybe you can own your residence and car) but no businesses, no stocks, etc. I guess you get a pension or salary for life or something.

People have demonstrated that they generally cannot be trusted to balance governmental power with conflicts of interest. Sure some people can, but ordinary voters picking from candidates filtered for “actively seeks power” have a crappy track record. Here’s hoping politicians like Mamdani can teach the voters a re things and start to turn that around.

I dunno, that might be some immensely relieving news to hear, that all this is not true reality.

I could see a legal-ish argument that Level 2 systems with a human accountable should do what the human instructs it to do, and that level 3+ systems with the machine and its creators accountable will strictly follow the law when it is able to.

But I could also see more practical safety arguments that when surrounded by traffic the autonomous vehicle should be able to at least match the speed of traffic in the slow lane, otherwise it creates a hazard. Then I’d look forward to the videos of people tricking the cat into driving 3x the speed limit through a school zone.

I have experienced the reality behind this comment so deeply in the past year.

I have been building a lot of stuff recently, and in 2026 alone I have made several large Home Depot lumber runs.

It’s always me in my old shorts & t-shirt, loading like 2 dozen 2x4s or 4x4s or plywood into either my little mazda3 sedan or the family SUV my wife drives that has a mix of “cute” and “sassy feminist” stickers all over the back. All around me are trumpy-looking chuds in their pristine business casual work clothes carrying a single little bag or mailbox post to their also-pristine emotional support trucks.

And I’m not faulting them generally for clean clothes and nice cars. I’m a software engineer with a desk job, and I am way overdue for a fun new car that won’t even fit lumber. But I am way way way over the stupid culture in this country where having a good job makes one a valid human and having a big vroom vroom truck makes one a legit rugged big strong boy.

I’m gonna guess that most F-150 drivers don’t even know that microplastics exist and don’t give a shit about pollution.

But also, you can still make the biogas trucks worse if you make them even heavier than they already are.

The suburb where I live is closer to rural than urban, but I could totally see getting one of these for commuting and errands around town.

Just give me an upgraded $10K version that can do 50 mph instead of 50 km/h, because once I get to the end of my street I’m turning into traffic comprised of F-150s and Escalades already going faster than that (illegally).

But then I could go around asking “what do you want?” with a suspicious smirk in my face!

Here’s my personal anecdote that supports this.

I live in Pennsylvania, which is considered a swing state, but it did vote for Trump both of the times he won. Pretty humiliating.

AGDQ this year was in Pittsburgh so I got to attend a couple days. It is by far the most inclusive crowd I’ve been in locally, where people can just let their true colors out without constant fear. I think it’s the only crowd where I’ve heard “trans rights” exclaimed and met with cheers. And it’s truly inclusive in both directions. I’m a big old bearded straight cis white guy and nothing made me feel out of place either.

Between gaming communities and FOSS/linux communities, I think it’s we nerds who are so inclusive!

This feels like such a double edged sword living in the US where Israel-supporting police-loving rich capitalists are widely labeled as the radical left if they dare to suggest that people should get healthcare or maybe we shouldn’t spend trillions blowing up brown people on the other side of the globe.

You know, the land of fucking geniuses where the batshit crazy pedo Nazi choice won the popular vote in 2024 against the Israel-supporting actual-cop capitalist who is right-wing to most of the rest of the world.

I’m not even sure what my point is here, maybe just expressing frustration. The overton window here is so far to the right, and people so passively absorb propaganda every day, that it feels like the entire spectrum of people from leftists to liberals need to form a coalition to at least slow & reverse the movement to the right, even if their end goals are all very different.

What it feels like is that the Republican party was actually supposed to be the controlled opposition to scare people into being comfortable voting for liberals, but then the propaganda worked too well and the mustache twirling evil caricatures got to be in charge instead. At this point I can only hope the level of ridiculousness knocks some sense into more people.

That jar reminds me of the end result of the sand ceremony that some people do at weddings. Several years ago I photographed a wedding for a middle aged couple who each already had kids, so with their Brady Bunch situation I think they had even more colors than this.

You can definitely say that everything with mass has energy. And yeah the two are kind of interchangeable.

But that does not mean that a photon HAS mass. It just means that we can calculate how much mass its energy is equivalent to.
