  • I miss my first apartment. I had more furniture, but life was simple. At least for a while.

My mistake was to help a friend out by inviting him for a beer after work. He had broken up with his girlfriend and needed a place of his own. I got him into an apartment in my building. Big mistake. The guy just couldn’t figure out how to be alone by himself. Every day just as I got home from work and sat down in my lawnchair, he’d ring my doorbell within 5 minutes wanting to hang out. It was alright for a while, but I soon got enough of socializing in all my free time. I’d rather be alone and do creative projects and such.

I told him off several times and explained how I needed personal time for myself, but he’d be back the very next day, not understanding how personal time could possibly take more than a few hours.

For the remaining time I lived there, I’d leave the door open, and just go on about my day whether or not he was around. The serenity was broken anyway.

Some constellations, including the Great Bear, were named long before our languages even existed.

Etymology wise we might say it comes from ancient Greek, but it’s also called Great Bear in languages that have no origin in Greek.

    Wikipedia - Cosmic Hunt

I’m going out on a limb here, but I believe the Great Bear is actually named after a great bear.

Not all cultures though. In Brazil, the Big Dipper is also known as “large anus of the snake”.

  • Yes, it is.

    It’s such a studid story.

Originally we had a patchwork of laws dating all the way back to 1833, when all kinds of flagging was made illegal. Only the royalty was allowed to use the flag. This was changed many times since then, but the basis was always the complete ban on flags.

These laws were largely disregarded since the wars of those times were long since over. Instead we had guidelines for proper etiquette. People followed the guidelines and everything was fine.

Until 2018. Somebody flew the Star Spangled Banner in such an annoying way that their neighbors questioned if it was legal. The court found it illegal, however this was then tried at the highest court, who came to the conclusion that the latest laws from 1915 couldn’t be used since the law had generally been disregarded for so long.

This triggered the right wing parties, who were afraid that the final legal decision would result in many more foreign flags. Especially since people at the same time were starting to fly Ukrainian flags as support. Imagine if the immigrants from other places also started using their own flags. Such horror. So the right wing demanded a new law.

And they got it. The new law from the beginning of 2025 now only allows flags from Denmark, Greenland, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany and… Ukraine. All other flags of foreign territores are illegal.

The EU, rainbow and pirate flags are also allowed since they do not represent a foreign country.

The other guidelines such as timing and procedures are still just guidelines. It’s perfectly legal to burn the flag in protest, have it wave after sundown, to let it touch the ground or wipe your ass in it, even if it is against the guidelines.

Also, if you do want to fly a foreign flag, it is possible to get permission. It only requires accept from the local police. As far as I know, nobody has ever been fined for illegal flagging.

  • Fully electric cars compound the issue with awkward “engine noises” and fake gear shifts

What? No, they do not, unless you make it. But who the hell would pay such gimmicks?

Actually I disagree with everything you said.

Driving electric is much more pleasant and a more direct wheel to tarmac experience. I thought I would miss the feeling of tossing the car through the gears and roaring the engine around a corner, but I don’t. It’s a lot more satisfying to accelerate with a more linear torque increase that doesn’t make your head nod like doll everytime the engine hits the maximum revolutions in a gear. Getting pushed back into the seat is fun and enjoyable in all cars, but even more so when the tickling in your stomach doesn’t stop until you let go of the accelerator.

Electric cars have electric engines. The engine hardly ever breaks. The maintenance required on electric cars are the same as on cars with combustion engines, except that combustion engines have more parts that can break. Software vs hardware is also exactly the same. Modern cars with combustion engines have the same amount of crappy software errors as electric cars. None of it has anything to do with the engine.

The sound is different, sure. It doesn’t roar like a bear. Instead it hisses like a vicious cat.

  • Sunvox is a masterpiece. Perfect for small size audio. It’s strange that it isn’t more widely used in game development or even webpages. Not just because of small sizes, but because it’s also possible to interact with the music, while it’s being generated. I have no idea of how to classify this as a piece of software but it’s mind boggling powerfull and it still runs perfectly on any potato.

It would be nice to have better recording options than using the sampler, but I guess that defies the purpose of it.

  • I think working time is the wrong place for politicians to regulate.

Sure, there’s a huge imbalance. Some people work a lot and some very little.

The key is that the the people who do work more than mandatory minimum hours, are also the people who enjoy working. Self employed or not, doesn’t matter. If people like working, they’ll work more. It’s really that simple.

Politicians ought to focus on regulation of how enjoyable work is. Then the working time would increase by itself, if that’s the ultimate goal for whatever reason.

I don’t think it is though. Productivity ought to be the end goal.

  • My daughter’s school did something similar. It was a project about future city development, where groups of kids could create their own visions of what the harbour in the city should be like.

Some went sciency and made robotic models and programmed led-strips and such, but most just painted the sides of cardboard boxes as a restaurant and printed a menu card, focusing on the business aspects.

The school then invited parents and the city council to come see the presentations and to vote on the best project.

They did all the work in school hours, so it’s not like the parents could assist if they wanted to. Of course some kids could potentially ask their parents for funding for expensive robots but I don’t think anyone did or what the point would be. It wasn’t a graded project and the winners got a bag of candy, so it’s hardly worth cheating for.

No doubt. I’m glad I had my 20s to roam around before getting kids, but I’m even more happy to still be young enough that I can travel the world and participate in physical activities with my kids as well. Having kids doesn’t have to mean giving up on experiencing life. They’re part of it, and they’re the best people to share it with. In hindsight, I probably could have cut my party years short by five years without missing a thing. Having kids was the best thing in my life. It might not be for everybody.

I’m in the late 40s now, and I feel it’s too late to have more by now. I know people who do in that age. Divorced couples going for the late common child or DINKs who finally made enough money. It looks really tough for them. It’s temporarily hard work for a couple of years. It’s hard if you’re young and don’t have money, but it’s also hard when you’re old and less agile and physical on top.

what is stopping women to have kids later in life

    Menopause.

But anyway, it’s generally a good idea to have children earlier, because you’ll get to spend more time with them and you won’t be the weird old parent in the school. Also health reasons and whatnot.

As for misogyny, I think it’s mostly from one generation to the next and also more often women to women. Most guys that I know would rather postpone having children as long as possible for the same reasons that you’ve stated.
