Yeah, that’s my case as well with my main bank. So I have a separate phone that remains off until I need it (and some other crappy apps for electricity, customs and other stuff). Otherwise I’m still rocking my trusty Pixel 8 Pro running on GrapheneOS from day 1. Now, it is highly likely that, from Pixel 10 and in GrapheneOS won’t be able to keep developing (I certainly hope I’m wrong), so I’m thinking on switching my 8 Pro for a 9Pro XL and keep it until GrapheneOS lands and agreement with an OEM to launch their own devices.

I guess all we can do is wait and see what happens in a month or so.

I hope you’re right. But in my experience, every country ends up voting for 1 of the 2 largest parties because “that other party will not get even 5%” and the whole population ends up disregarding them. And this is by design.

Then there’s the fact that they don’t give a damn about what people do in Europe or America. As a matter of fact, to them porn and similar content is a sure way to self-destruction, so “when your enemy is doing something stupid, don’t interfere” comes into place. It’s highly unlikely they’ll block this for other countries.

If you’re using an Nvidia card, the easiest way into Linux for gaming (in my opinion) is Bazzite, as aguasemgas mentioned.

Otherwise, any distro will do. I prefer Fedora Workstation, which is what I use for work (as do my wife and kids) but use Bazzite in my laptop because it’s a System76 Gazelle with a 3050TI,and I don’t like the current status of PopOS. All my games run great, and everything else is a FlatPak, so not much need to tweak anything really.

You do make a good point. However, consider the fact that you could talk with your wife, kids, friends or anyone for that matter, and the only way someone else would find out was if one of the parties involved told someone else or if you were too loud for someone else to listen. Now we have to go fully out of our way to keep anything under wraps, and even then, there’s no guarantee that nobody else knows.

I firmly believe this is the worst the world has ever been for privacy and individualism, and everything points to that everything is going to be worse moving forward.

Additionally, it’s highly that any of us lived through those times you mentioned, so I’m speaking from my own life experience, and I’m over half a century old.

I’m not going to defend the US and it’s tech oligarchs, they are all shit, but the way things are going, the EU and the UK are currently in way worse shape than the US in terms of all this 1984 bullshit.

No country is safe from this anymore, and we may very well be looking at the worse time to be alive when it comes to privacy, regardless of where you live.

If you like “unlikely to break, don’t mind my software and kernel a bit behind”, anything Debian or Ubuntu based will be fine. Now, if you want cutting edge, even if you have to get pissed and confused a bit, Arch or Fedora based, in my opinion.

At the end of the day it comes down to taste and need. They all work (mostly 😋).

This is the best advice, in my opinion, keeping your data in a separate partition (or a separate drive if possible). This makes distro-hopping a breeze, since your data remains intact between distros.

After that, jump around as much as you want until you find something you’re comfortable with.

Even if it’s based on Signal’s encryption, it doesn’t mean it’s implemented as it is in Signal.

In all honesty, I’m very tired of these invasions. But the reality is that this was created by us, parents, families, and tech corps and governments just saw the opening and walked right in.

Tech made us lazy, we fell into the bliss of convenience while entirely dropping our rights on their laps to do with as they wish. I’m guilty of that myself. I allowed Google home and Alexa devices into my home and used them all the time. Then it all clicked when I started seeing information on subjects that interested me, my wife and my kids all over the place, without even looking for them. I panicked bad when I realized something was very wrong, but the damage was already done.

This is what got me into the Privacy and security wagon, and it took me almost 8 years to revert that as much as possible and finally have some sense of safety (because some of that stuff is out there for good, and there’s nothing any of us can do about it).

Now I keep a sort of digital fortress around my family and myself, and I not willing to let it go anymore. This has made our family much more interactive in real life while at the same time harder targets for tech corps and governments.

Evidently, there are some of these that are unavoidable for us common folk, but we can compartmentalize our lives in ways that it’s harder, if not impossible to tie everything about us together into a single fully integrated profile. Yes, it requires work, time, money and missing out on some convenience, but the alternative is infinitely worse, full of unknown dangers that can affect us now or later.

Until most people are fully pushing back on all these dangers, it will only get way worse over time.

I believe that removing the possibility of profit for tech companies is the only way to effectively reverse this trend, however, most people are too distracted by all the screens around them and the carefully crafted content made precisely for this purpose to figure out what is really going on, and by the time we all end up figuring it out, it may very well be too late.

So, I would like to see less excuses by most people on how “it’s too hard for most people”, “some parents are not as tech savvy” and similar BS. That only helps keep the myth of “there’s nothing I can do about it” I alive, which is what all these institutions are banking on.
