Just noting that the “baseline”, I believe, is just the average temp for all recorded temps for that date, and the std. dev. Is likewise based on those recorded temps. They didn’t just some nominal values that they’re comparing to. The baseline changes with each new recorded temp. So, yes, they’re definitely higher than pre-hydrocarbon economy.

Yes, the graph is meant to compare the deviation from average (mean) on a given day every year. Each line is a different year, the independent axis is the day of the year (e.g. July 12th), and the dependent axis is the number of standard deviations from average temp for said date.
The expected temperature varies wildly depending on the day of the year which is why is makes sense to find the average and standard deviation for the same date year over year and compare the measured values to that statistic. If you are comparing different dates, say June 3rd to February 18th, what meaningful information do you gain by saying that June 3rd was hotter than the average between those two dates? But if this June 3rd was the hottest June 3rd on record by several standard deviations, that’s notable.
Day of the year comparison is as close to apples to apples as you can get given the seasons. And it is much harder to compare year over year levels at a given date if they are graphed sequentially, especially for 44 years worth of data. So you overlay them aligning on date, set your average and deviations based on the measured temps for that date for all years, and you can see seasonal trends or outliers such as this one.

That’s an Elliott 405 computer. It could perform up to 500,000 instructions per second, aka FLoating-point Operations Per Second (FLOPS).
The other is a Raspberry Pi Zero which can perform 250,000,000 FLOPS, 500 times the Elliott 405.
And, the Elliott 405 cost between 140k-350k in 1957, depending on the features and configuration chosen. With inflation to 2015 dollars, that’s $1.2-2.9 million ($2.40 per 1 FLOPS)
The Raspberry Pi Zero was their new low-power, low-cost board in 2015. It only cost $5 in 2015 (50 million FLOPS per $1)
And for an extra 30 bucks ($35 total) in 2015, you could have picked up a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, which is capable of 24,000,000,000 FLOPS. That is 96 times faster than the Pi Zero, and 48,000 times faster than the Elliott 405. (~686 million FLOPS per $1)


Not an electrical or computer engineer so I can’t really speak on the limits of miniaturizing hardware in terms of physics or technological ability. But even if you can fit a full computer on a fingernail, it’s gonna be hard to have a even just a USB-C connector on a finger nail. At a certain point, there’s little reason to miniaturize computers further when they still have to interface with human usable devices. Instead of miniaturizing the board further, continuing to increase transistor density on the cpu and chips to get more compute power in the same area seems like the obvious focus for future miniaturization efforts.

Computer science is not a soft science. Soft sciences are qualitative studies, often on human behavior, like psychology, sociology, anthropology, etc. Computer science is generally considered a hard science. I mean I don’t apply my degree in any sort of hard scientific manner. I went for engineering instead. But actual computer science is a formal science.


I’m pretty bitter about both in my case.
I took AP calculus, biology, and physics in high school and got full credit for each. Went to Purdue and already had my science req covered and got to enter straight into calc II, (I also took discrete math later which will be relevant).
Long story short, 2 years and money problems later, I dropped out and worked for 8 years. When I finally went back to school, I went to Ivy Tech and basically had to restart from scratch. Literally the only credit they honored from Purdue was my Abnormal Psych elective course. And they also honored my Calc AP. So I had to retake Calc II, and Physics I and II. Also discrete math for no apparent reason as nothing was different about it. They didn’t honor the calc II course because their calc I was more like Calc 1.5, and calc II was more like Calc 2.5. So basically my AP calc and calc II together only covered their calc I class. They didn’t honor the Physics AP credits because it wasnt calc-based even though after taking it, that only led to a meaningful difference for like one chapter.
So, I didnt really mind taking the courses again from an academic sense. It was nice to have a refresher for calc II before taking calc III later. And I love Physics in general. But they didn’t offer physics on my local campus on the semester I needed it because I started in the spring but it was also a prerequisite for all of my higher level core courses. If I waited to take them on that campus, it would push back my graduation by a year.
So, I had to sign up for them at another campus that was 70(!!!) miles away. For two semesters straight, I had to drive my happy ass 90 minutes to class, for 2 hours of lecture and 3 hours of labs, back to back, and then drive the 90 minutes back home again. Twice a week. 16 hours of commute, lecture and lab a week for a course that was almost identical to what I had already studied, and ultimately had zero bearing on my actual degree.
What makes it worse? After finishing my Associates at Ivy Tech, I went to Northern Kentucky University to complete my Bachelor’s. And they honored almost everything. All my AP classes. Almost all my Purdue Credits. And almost all my Ivy Tech Credits. So, I had retaken Calc II and Physics I and II for no damn reason in the end. I did enter NKU with my math minor almost complete at least though. I only had to take 3 more math classes for it, 2 of which were already required for my Core CS classes anyway.
But the one class they didn’t honor? From either Purdue or Ivy Tech? Discrete Math. No idea why. I took that shit for a third goddamn time, and it was the same damn shit as before. sigh. Y’all wanna talk about the Seven Bridges of Königsberg?


I was about to say, looks like my CS courses, apart from Thermo and Topology. I didnt actually take crypto, but it was an elective, I believe.
In Britain, those would all be very serious names for diseases or some shit.
When I was is college, I was in the mood to go to the movies and no one was free to go with me. So I looked at what was playing and decided to pick something that was only mildly interesting to me to save better movies for when I went with a friend. So consequently, I spent the rest of the month trying to convince my friends that they needed to go see Slumdog Millionaire. That was one of my better movie viewing experiences, going in completely blind, on my own in a nearly empty theatre watching a movie I had no expectations for that ended up winning all of the awards for being super good.
But yeah, I enjoy doing things solo sometimes. Movies, dinner with a book or podcast, walking through the city/park, going for a long bike ride or drive in the middle of nowhere to just trying to explore and get lost somewhere. It’s relaxing and peaceful.
