The recent surge revolves around binge drinking and hard liquor, when it was originally around wine. And supposedly women are drinking more than men, nowadays.
The mustache fell out of favour in the late 90’s but it was almost quintessential to the “true” portuguese male, along with the elongated pinky fingernail, greased back hair and sun glasses.
It has found some degree of revival but usually with full beards nowadays.

The mustache was a mandatory fixture for the portuguese man between the 70’s and the 90’s.
