Hey folks, Im wondering if I should be concerned or if this is normal.

My folding bike (Tern Link D8) has a 1x8 gearset and I’ve ridden it for over 2600km.

Today while lubing the chain, which I tend to do from the smallest cog while backspinning the pedals, I kept having the chain fall into the second smallest cog.

It happens when spinning fast, but also when it spins slowly.

I’ve checked the limit screws, and the derailleur barrel knob so things run smoothly when actually pedaling.

I don’t recall this happening in previous times I’ve lubed the chain, and I’m wondering if I should be checking anything else or chalk it up to being normal.

How fast are you backpedaling? Could it be as simple as it’s hopping? Backpedaling puts slack on the chain, and if the derailleur is a little close the slack + pressure could make it jump up a cog.

It actually goes to the next cog easier/more if I do it slow, but it still does it when spinning fast.

This is all backpedaling by hand. I don’t usually ride in the lowest cog, and I likely wont seeing that the chain locks when the chain shifts like that.

I’m bringing it up now because I haven’t noticed this before.

It sounds like your derailleur is a little misaligned or your cable tension is off then. If you don’t ride in that gear (rarely use lowest or highest myself) you may not notice it, but your outside gears are where you’ll feel the chain rubbing most frequently due to it being in it’s furthest position, or because the tension is highest / lowest. If it doesn’t happen at all in your riding sweet spot I wouldn’t worry about it but might be worth getting it adjusted at a good lbs. If mine isn’t busy they’ll usually adjust mine no charge.
