Very bold statement. I am unsure how it will be possible to beat the technical leap from the 4th to 5th generation. Going from 2D on the SNES to 3D (with antialiasing which wasnt even available on most affordable gaming PC GPUs at the time) on the N64 was such a massive leap that I dont think anything has come close since.
Yeah the leap from Mario World to Mario 64 was mind blowing.
Is the next Xbox going to play games in 4D?
You’ll be able to smell your games, but only with a TV that supports it.
I remember reading that they actually tested something like this when developing the Xbox One Controller.
Edit: Found an article about it: https://www.polygon.com/2013/11/19/5121136/microsofts-100-million-xbox-one-controller-protoype-danced-with-smell
Nintendo already has a franchise where your gameplay adjusts based off of real time 🤓
Once I reada rumor that the Next Xbox would run the games “hybridly”, part in the hardware and part in the cloud.
I think that this, if well done, could provide such a leap, this and DLSS/AI-like stuff.
They already promised that for Xbox one, once they realized PS4 would be more powerful. Its marketing BS.
That would be such a titanic disaster for PR. It would be a repeat of the “Xbox One can’t share games with your friend” nightmare all over again. Xbox suffered for a gen and a half because of that and they are only just now barely recovering. Doing that again would be career suicide.
This is not what i said
Xbox never did the things I described, no company in the universe used cloud to help process the game you’re playing. Or is the machine or the cloud processing it.
At the start of the XB1 generation, they announced an “always online” requirement for every game, all the time. It was such a disaster, they walked it back before the console even launched, but the damage was done.
Hybrid local/online games becoming the norm rather than a genre (MMO) means the same thing. No local play = no ownership of your library. It works as part of a subscription, but anybody paying $70+ for that is throwing their money away.
Edited to clean up some typos.
If the console does not do 100% of processing locally, and relies on a Cloud service for part of it’s processing, then from a functional standpoint it is no different than the Xbox One’s originally stated always online requirement, which damaged Xbox’s reputation very badly.
No, but Microsoft made claims regarding the Xbox One’s potential to use the cloud for computation within games after it was clear how much the system specifications would result in an under-performance vs the PS4.
However, those claims were also clearly bollocks, since nobody did that, ever.
Microsoft Flight Simulator, Crackdown 3 (dunno if they changed plans about this though)
The jump from Xbox One, 1.4 teraflops, to Series X, 12 teraflops, is 10.6 so as long as the next one is 23 teraflops it will be the largest jump ever. It’s easy when you manipulate the numbers.
The 4090 is around 100 teraflops so even if it’s a quarter as powerful as that they can claim success.
The same size jump (8.5x) would land at 100 teraflops, not 23.
It’s relative, not linear.
That’s why they said it’s easy when you manipulate the numbers.
I don’t buy it. Xbox has for a while now pushed away from being a hardware platform to being a software platform. Specifically a gamepass platform. They don’t need to sell Xboxes anymore, they need to sell subscriptions and they can sell these on many devices.
Also, what does a next generation console even mean anymore? If you look through the history of gaming the big jumps have brought big gaming enhancements that simply couldn’t be possible on previous generations. Since Xbox 360 it’s just more resolution and frame rate. The only real current gen gameplay feature through hardware I’ve seen is fast storage which allows for things like Ratchet and Clank to do that multiverse jumping.
You’re forgetting the controller. Haptics, adjustable tension on triggers, etc. Also spatial sound.
Never had a controller pick up a drift quicker than my bought-new 2 series x ones, the other half my controllers being from like 2018 off eBay, used
I had stick drift on one of my PS5 controllers as well. And Switch. Very annoying.

This works on every modern SSD which is standard in most pc for years now and also a reason why this games works on pc without that ‘feature hardware’ in your pc.
Consoles have gone the way of cellphones.
It will have the ability to inject ads directly into your brain
Go see “dream scenario” with Nicolas cage
It’s AI is it?
Yeah, I’ll this chatter I’m hearing from ms and Sony is I’m not buying there next consol.
I can count on my hands how many titles I give a fuck about on current hardware. They can get fucked if they think I’m refreshing the hardware again so soon.
Might wait till they get out of the uncanny valley
Yeah thats one thing I’ve been really disappointed by with the new consoles. Nothing really jumps out at me when I think of exclusives or “next gen” gaming experiences. I think part of the issue is the pandemic really messed up development, but also I think these consoles need to stick around longer.
After 3 or so years they consider the consoles “dead” and then it feels like everything just shifts towards the next console. I would like to see these companies taking more creative risks like we saw in the 90’s and 2000’s. The past decade has felt…very stagnant
It must be a sideways leap. Maybe they change over to nvidia styled architecture
Could be similar to the leap Apple delivered with the switch to Apple Silicon
The next xbox will be slower and use less battery?
