I do this quite often if I have a full cart and see someone behind me with just a basket.
I did this once and proceeded to watch them argue with the cashier about the receipt for several minutes before calling the manager over.
Curb Your Enthusiasm theme plays
Everyone should do this! It’s such a very simple way to make someone else’s day better. And it makes you feel better too…
But I also just have a couple items!
“I’m so sorry but I’m limited to one Good Deed per location per day…”
“let is”
Lettuce
Thanks!
pulls out stack of coupons
Did you bring enough for the whole line? Put them away if not!
and lets* you skip ahead
No no, they definitely meant “let us you skip”.
I mean I would, but then I look over and see that the self-checkout is nearly empty and you’re holding a single coke in your hand and I’m thinking: ‘no’
If there was an empty self checkout, I sincerely doubt anybody with one single item would be standing in line behind you & your cart full of groceries.
You’ve never been to Florida!
Um, yes I have. Can we stay on topic here?
My point is that human behavior can be regional and also affected by age. E.g. There are many grocery stores in Florida that don’t have or removed self checkout because the location is dominated by retired folks that won’t use the machines.
Boomers are afraid of self-checkout
I’m half afraid of it because automation and the death of “unskilled” labor.
I use it anyway though. I didn’t for many years, but they slowly started closing manned lanes. After Covid they closed them entirely in my local Walmart a few hours before the store closed (when I was passing through).
I had finally accepted that clerks just weren’t going to be a thing anymore and then they suddenly did an about face because of theft. That’s what they told me anyway. They now close the self checkout and open a few manned lanes instead a few hours before closing.
I do this if the clock is ticking towards 21 and the person behind me is going to buy alcohol. (Here you’re only allowed to sell between 9-21.)
I’ve been there, praying that I make it in time, behind someone with a trolley full of stuff. I know the pain.

Not in the off licences, no. The one by my house is quite large and well stocked so I do most of my grocery shopping there. They have two tills and usually only one is manned. Only if the queue starts twisting between the shelves, someone temporarily fills the second till. I’ve ushered people to pay before me many times.
I do this when I’m not in a rush. I do not do it for entitled people who expect it. That is where it stops being wholesome and an expected chore. It also helps when there are express lines as there can be a lot of people with just one item and one day I would like to leave the store.
