Liberal echo chambers rant about human rights owed to people. Conservative echo chambers talk about how to remove human rights from individuals you don’t like.

remove human rights from individuals you don’t like

yeah, i’d say it’s more like removing the rights that the government gave themselves. as Reagan said, “terrifying words - I’m from the government and i’m here to help”

I’d say the majority of conservatives don’t like government and wish they’d have less power over The People. One instance of this is the general opinion on the ATF (or BATFE if you’re going by their modern(ish) name), they’re an enforcement agency and yet are still making laws (they’re doing so illegally by making “rules” on accessories such as Pistol Braces and Bump Stocks, both of which were given the OK from the ATF approximately 10 years ago (for the braces at least, can’t recall about the bump stocks). In fact, when you look into the history of the ATF, they were apart of the Treasury Department because they’re only job was to collect the taxes and fees, apply for permits, etc for Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

This is just one instance where the rights of the people are getting trampled on because of an agency where the director wasn’t even voted in. Doesn’t matter if you “need” it or “want” it but it’s still nevertheless a right that you have. A practical approach that many people, even within the firearms industry, have told others is “if you don’t want it, then don’t buy it. We’re not forcing you to purchase anything.”

One of the sentiments I’ve been seeing online is the phrase “Become Ungovernable.” I think we need to strive towards that.

You don’t have to endure shit, maybe stop brigading other people’s communities if you don’t like them. You can’t possibly willingly search up a community for an ideology you don’t agree with, then complain about having to see them.

And the left doesn’t do the exact same thing?

As an anarchist I qualify as neither liberal or conservative (unless you view anarchism as the the ultimate conservatism, and some do).

I’ve found that I often learn things from my conservative friends if I’m actually willing to listen to what they have to say.

I’ve found that I often learn things from my liberal friend if I’m actually willing to listen to what they have to say.

Until we are all willing to get out of our echo chambers and listen to people who believe differently than we do, we are going to both stagnate and fragment as a society.

Why do people feel the need to sign up with an ideology in the first place? You know you can hold all your same beliefs without declaring meaningless solidarity with every other goon that chooses the same team name.

Everyone has an ideology, whether you realize or acknowledge it or not. That doesn’t mean that everyone who subscribes to the same ideology has the same views on everything.

People who consider themselves conservatives do exist, whether we like it or not. I much prefer them to be forced to be confronted with other views and opinions every now and then that challenge their worldview.

Otherwise, they will go to some echochamber hosted by right wingers. This has already happened to the point where they basically live in a parallel universe and self-isolate. I don’t think it’s in anybody’s interest for us to also encourage this self-isolation…

Everyone has ideals and beliefs, an ideology is a curated selection of ideals and beliefs that help people that don’t really want to sort through their own ideals and beliefs feel connected. Most people who claim an ideology haven’t really thought through the reality of those beliefs and people who think through the reality of beliefs tend not to want to be defined by a particular ideology.

Of course if you only look through that lens you can just sort everyone you hear from into a familiar box and that will further reinforce your belief that everyone has an ideology. so this probably won’t change your opinion on that.

But whatever people’s beliefs are- what I find amusing is the “as a liberal\conservative\independent\anarchist\libertarian\whatever, I think” crowd. Their declaration of allegiance comes before any expression of their ideas or beliefs, which tells me they didn’t come to those beliefs by reason or experience, they’re just representing their belief club.

I don’t want to get into a discussion about definitions, but in my view, an ideology is a set of principles, believes and values. Often ideologies overlap and are shared among different people, but you could also have a unique and personal ideology. In my view, everyone has an ideology, whether they deny to have one or not.

What you describe here I would call dogma, which is a strict ideology often enforced in a top down fashion.

Of course if you only look through that lens you can just sort everyone you hear from into a familiar box and that will further reinforce your belief that everyone has an ideology. so this probably won’t change your opinion on that.

We are simply talking about definitions… You can call it “a set of ideals and beliefs”, I generally call it “ideology”. But I’m flexible with my definitions, what matters to me is that we understand eachother.

Their declaration of allegiance comes before any expression of their ideas or beliefs, which tells me they didn’t come to those beliefs by reason or experience, they’re just representing their belief club.

I agree that this seems to be a trend that is much more common in the past couple of years where everyone has to apply a strict label to them as a person. I generally avoid that, or I use something vague like “leftist” to describe myself, but I do think it often leads to prejudice where people assume they know all my personal views simply based on the label I use, but that’s generally how it goes on the internet especially.

Well you did a poor job of not getting into a discussion about definitions- lol. But I don’t really care. People who declare their ideology pre-discussion are self-enforcing their chosen ideology as dogma, so pick whatever term you prefer.

Then what is the value of that label, or any? Why not just express your ideas on their own merit and avoid the association altogether?

I mean at least I’m not arguing that you have to use my definitions or that my definition is the only correct one. I kinda have to know how you use the term to understand, but now that I do, I don’t have an issue using the term “ideology” the way you do.

Then what is the value of that label, or any?

In my opinion, there is not a lot of value in labels. I agree with you here. That’s why I try to avoid them.

But sometimes, people will start to apply their own labels on you regardless and it will often be labels that don’t fit. And at that point, I will rather use my own label than have a label that I don’t like be applied to me.

In those circumstances I recommend turning it around on them and make them explain why they assumed a label for you. Let them expose their own ridiculous team name biases. Or better yet just ignore them because anyone who speaks to you as a representative of an ideology isn’t really speaking to you at all.

Not sure I fully agree. Both the left and they right love The State, but for different reasons. I believe in the abolition of The State. I think both the left and the right disapprove of that.

As to anarchism being “conservative” anarchism is all about The Individual. That tends to be a conservative view point as the left believes in The Collective.

I find I typically agree with both the left and the right about 50% of the time. It is certainly an interesting place to live one’s life.

The left doesn’t love the state. Its a necessary evil in our current society. Dissolution of the state is a byproduct of achieving a post-capitalist society in classical Marxism. I think you’re either using a wholly different definition of terms like left and right than I am, or that you’re possibly confused about the naming conventions involved.

Modern conservatism is strongly hierarchical. It may publicly preach ideals of the individual, but it always enacts policies that favor social hierarchy. That is the opposite of anarchism.

Nope, I hate both sides for different reasons. Nice try though.

Conservatives have based their identity around a narcissist and want to return to 1950 and strip away women’s and LGBT rights. And America is not a Christian nation. It was founded on religious freedom, but none of them got the memo.

Liberals got a guy who can’t even form a sentence and shakes hands with ghosts into the white house. The press secretary is equally incompetent. Is that really the best they can do? Also, look at Roe v Wade. It got overturned because democrats didn’t give enough of a shit about actually codifying things like abortion when they had 40 fucking years to do so.

I believe in equal rights but am against government overreach. Both sides are right about different things, but the execution on both sides leaves me dumbfounded.

One man raped women and children (“I SHOULD’VE POPPED HER CHERRY!!!” and, of course, “GRAB EM BY THE PUSSY”), is facing countless indictments related to treason and national security, hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths, stochastic terrorism, literally has resent toward veterans as he sees them as a threat to his masculinity, 191m dollars golfing, it goes on and on. And another “doesn’t talk right” and “is old”. I hope you can one day realize how stupid you not only sound but ARE when you say/believe things like this. Biden said he didn’t want his kids growing up in a racial jungle when the idea of interracial schools was brought up, and of course “If you don’t vote for me, you ain’t black!” And he has been caught on camera sniffing little girls’ hair and grabbing at young women who clearly didn’t want to be touched. So no, Biden is no better than Trump.

TLDR: Biden is a racist pedophile who has been caught on camera.

Meta discussion - the existence of this post makes the wonder what moderation tools on lemmy are like? And if there’s systems in place to deal with unwanted content.

    https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/users/04-moderation.html

    1. Users report posts & comments
    2. Communities have mods
    3. Instances have admins
    4. Instances that disagree on how moderation should be done can block the other

The moderation tools are pretty similar to most other platforms, as you neatly laid out.
