Is that a headphone jack!?
I like headphone jacks.
This needs an interrobang‽
You can tell whether I’m posting from my phone or my desktop by whether I use a
‽
or a?!
.(This one was from my desktop despite the interrobang, but that’s because I could easily copy-paste yours.)
Not that easily. I could read theirs, but yours was a box
Huh, weird. Does it work without the code formatting‽
Yes
I’m here with a usb c to 1/8" jack like a moron! The EU pushed replaceable batteries, maybe we need a headphone jack bill haha.
Paradoxically, all cheap devices come with one, and even with an FM radio, so cheap devices actually have more stuff than high end smartphone. Also please give me an FM radio FFS, it is one of the most usueful services during emergencies and other situation, also I like listening radio thanks
Probably because most FM stations have apps.
Back in the dumb phone era I had some Ericson TDMA bar phone that had (very basic) web browsing and a combination FM radio/Headset adapter. I specifically remember reading live 9/11 updates on it during class.
I LOVE the idea. I’m slowly mutating into a wired earbud audiophile (not sure what they call themselves), and the sound is just so much cleaner; plus there’s nothing to charge.
4 hours of music on these ones!
Mine just plug in.
my headphones have 24 hour battery life, so honestly im fine with my next phone not having a headphone jack, i do wish most still had one though
i bought a “new” phone just because i was sick of using the shitty ass headphone jack adapters
so now i have 1 phone for music and the other for games 😂
Bring back transparent shells, I want to see that sexy technology god damn it!
Check out the company Nothing. They make products like the Nothing Phone with transparent designs
Fairphone 5 also has a translucent back option.
I’m curious about the 30 day battery
Could just be the regular battery not having to supply power to an energy sucking spinning disk.
Probably the same original form factor but a new lithium ion
I think the SSD uses more power than the original hard drives do. I bought an adapter for the iPod classic to put an SD card in it and there was a few articles about power draw being higher for ssds. I might be misremembering the comparison though, it’s been a couple years.
Wow, that’s really surprising, you’d think a spinning platter would draw more power than solid state transistors
It’s kind of surprising but not super surprising if you’ve ever seen the stock drive in them. The hard drives in the classic are tiny, 1.8inch 4200rpm units. Power draw on the drive case is half an amp at 3.3v. SSDs are like 5 watts plus whatever circuitry you need to convert the interfaces.
Bought an as-is lot of those via eBay.
Tested and verified broken before being sold “as-is”, I’m sure.
If I recall correctly, it was a special made spindle that could handle many spin ups and downs, and they used a massive 10 minute buffer so it loads up the buffer and spins down.
That may be due to other factors. I will be up front that I don’t have a lot of specifics, but I do know this: in retro computing, SD is hard to implement as a replacement for old-school disks because it means a lot of overhead. For that reason, Compact Flash is still the preferred format for a lot of products aimed at that space.
Perhaps that is at play here, because increased overhead should also equal a reduction in battery life (modulo the spinning disk).
I used a modern 3000mA lithium ion battery which provides about 60 hours of music playback. That’s about 2 hours per day which is much more than I use!
60 hours is two and a half days.
Well yes, but most people aren’t listening to music 24/7
battery life is always measured in terms of continuous playback, not user defined usage
That’s not how battery life on these sort of devices is usually reported.
imadethis new way of reporting battery life!
It’s a three hundred day battery if you listen for five minutes a day.
There is some precedent for trying to estimate typical usage… Maybe in the lightbulb world.
Probably the wrong way to calculate it in the audio world, but the imadethis comment made up for it.
Brilliant deduction
How much is that in watt-hours?
They sell 3000mah replacement batteries vs the original 850mah. I think some solid state drives can save power, but others can use more.
That’s as long as some fiancés.

Now do my boy, Zune ❤️
Man, the Zune was the best MP3 player experience in its day… They even had the OG music subscription service. For $15 bucks a month and then they let you keep $15 of music forever. So it was a no brainier if you’d buy an album a month anyway.
Yo…I still have two HDs that work… they’re amazing
Dude that thing is sick. I use my phone for music, and it’s okay except for the dozen spam calls I get every day interrupting it. And there’s no setting for that, of course.
Many phones have “Do not disturb”-mode, or even airplane mode.
You can also go into the settings and disconnect from your mobile provider if you really want peace and quiet.
I think they mean no setting to continue playing music. Most people want to leave the phone active, no matter how annoying, in case they get something important.
Make a do not disturb option that blocks calls from numbers you don’t know. Everyone you care about can still reach you easily.
Everyone that makes it through the spam filter goes straight to voicemail unless they’re a contact. That is way.
And then I never check the messages because anyone important will just text me.
Android actually automatically rejects spam calls if you tell it to. They’ve had it for over half a decade now.
Check out pre-android Sony Walkmans - they are the absolute shiznit.
With that playlist feature that’s never been ported? Somebody posted about it here. Lets you choose a vibe from your local music, offline. Goes by BPM and something.
I think you’re referring to Sony’s ‘SensMe’ function. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to use it because it relies on their proprietary software which isnt available for my OS. Would be great to have it baked into the device.
Yes, you’re right! Hope somebody develops a similar cross-platform feature someday.
That would be amazing!
For real I wish there was a way to get my phone to play only music through headphones or speaker. Any time I get a notification I want it only through my phone’s speaker and not what I’m listening to music to.
Are you preparing for a zombie apocalypse?
Anyway, this is the coolest shit I have ever seen today, and maybe the best one here on Lemmy!
If I was I’d be playing the theme song from 28 Days Later in the picture ☺️. Thank you!
Decrufting before I click to listen

Edit: Ah yes, F♯ A♯ ∞, a classic!
“post rock”? And it’s bagpipes? Hmm interesting
Edit: okay it got better after a couple minutes, nice
Yeah but is it still locked to iTunes? Cause fuck that noise if it is.
Otherwise… I’ll take 3
Edit: looks like it is… damn
It’s a quick Google search for an alternative software that is pretty user-friendly and independent of Apple.
Also I suggest replacing the Hard drive with a card that lets you put in SD cards.
Back in the day, I used to rock iPod Linux. Looks like it’s still about http://www.ipodlinux.org/
There was also rockbox that let you play flac on iPod. https://www.rockbox.org/
Or less exteme, I’m sure that foobar2000 had plugins for managing your iPod.
I ‘member putting a movie on a tiny little Nano. And Doom.
Girlsnerds loved it. Simpler times. Both made possible by Linux IIRC!
Rockbox is the GOAT
it let’s you use the iPod like a USB drive where you can play anything that you put on there. it can also play ogg vorbis or vorbis or a lot of at her formats.
I got my 2 Gen Nano in 2008 and ditched iTunes after day one, EphPod worked just fine.
If you like this aesthetic, perhaps check out the Tangara on Crowd Supply. https://www.crowdsupply.com/cool-tech-zone/tangara
It’s fully open-source, too, so anyone can contribute to making improvements and a company can never discontinue it.

Tell that to Yuzu.
Shoulda used clear purple for that real nostalga hit.
But awesome work
Do you have a guide or a part list or anything? I still have my iPod I bought new in 2006 but it hasn’t seen use in many years for a slew of issues, the main one being the headphone jack itself failing, but I’d love to refresh it like this.
Ditto. My 5.5g ipod video looks like he’ll, but I’d like to bring it back to life.
Look at then_three_more’s post in this thread
Always cool to see ‘retro’ tech brought back, especially with major overhauls. Kinda wish Apple still did dedicated ‘dumb’ MP3 players, if I’m being honest.
Bet you could manage with a microcontroller and some parts. Use a bare chip, solder it all fancy (might take a few tries, use something cheap, order in bulk, attach the big expensive drive last), print the case, etc. Bet there’s even a guide out there somewhere.
Yeah it’s nice to have the built in OS support though
Yeah that’d be nice, but, lost technology; no longer exists.
Build it yourself or get nothing.
I’ve seen a few open hardware projects for “dumb” MP3 players over the years. I found this article on the Tangara project and am tempted to build one.
Edit: Scrolled down and saw someone already posted this.
That’s dope!
Well that’s awesome and I think I’ve found a new favorite sub.
I still got Planet of the apes on mine. They wanted people to know it can run mp4’s on that little screen.
Cool.
Love personal playlists. I use an old phone with SD card to use Bluetooth into my home theater system.
Dude thats so cool! Thanks for sharing!
