Dog Day Afternoon literally is a masterpiece and has been copied for damn near 50 years now. But the performance that holds that entire movie together is Al Pacino’s central performance. it’s a masterclass in acting and especially charisma where you see this dude go from confident, to panicked, to being a cult of personality, etc. Then when you get the twist about why he’s really robbing the bank it adds layers to the performance. I think Nicholson in a lot of ways was outstanding but playing a caricature of himself. I always thought the stand out performances in that movie were Brad Dourif and Louise Fletcher.
