I’m just asking for recommendations in case, I feel like migrating to a smaller instance or maybe try kbin for a change (but I’ll miss the voyager web app)

Well, you can try mine, https://lemmings.world. It’s federated with the bigger instances so you won’t miss any content. It’s well maintained and supported. And I plan on maintaining it long-term. Also it has Lemmings in the name.

I just finished migrating over to your instance from lemmy.world. I’m liking what I see. Everything seems nice & snappy. (One suggestion: consider turning on email verification to shut down potential bot accounts a bit more thoroughly)

It takes a bit more effort to setup your subscribed /c’s on a smaller instance (if you’re the first on the instance to sub to a /c, you need to already know the address for it). But once you’re subbed to everything you want, it’s business as usual. And without constant downtimes!

(EDIT: Had to log in to my old .world account to find this post to comment on it, since I had it bookmarked here)

        consider turning on email verification

That’s been on my todo list for a while. Though I have crafted some SQL queries that help me with finding bots, until I have time for the email stuff I think I got this covered (even though it takes more time).

If you have any questions or anything else to add about the instance, feel free to reach me!

This is a great list of general-purpose sort of “next step down in size from lemmy.world”-instances.

Well, by “good” I meant general purpose, no NSFW, federates with bigger instances, consitent uptime … etc.

My instance (https://lemmings.world) fits most of that!

        • general purpose
        • federates with bigger instances (I even have a bot running that’s subscribing to popular communities across Lemmy instances so the All feed is full of content and really comparable to the biggest instances)
        • consistent uptime (I have 100% according to lemmyverse.net and 98.93% according to fediverse observer)
        • the only criteria that doesn’t fit is that I allow NSFW, but it has to be clearly tagged as NSFW, meaning you can simply disable NSFW on your profile

Hey, OP here. Just joined your instance.

Quick question… What do people usually do when they have accounts in multiple instances ?

            Glad to see you here!

Well, depends on if you want to use the other account or not. I had an account on lemmy.world very briefly and I simply don’t use it anymore. I didn’t delete it in case I need it for some testing, but I don’t use it.

Generally I’d say people use their app to login to multiple accounts? I know Liftoff (which I use) can do it, though I don’t use the feature very much. I think I’ve read some apps can merge the feeds from all your accounts into one, though I don’t know which (maybe even Liftoff can do it, I really don’t know).

I moved to lemme.ee. i find the rules and regulations and reason for defederation in lemmy.world is so insane. and performance was also not good on lemmy.world. many users have made accounts on the server. Lemme.ee is fast and didn’t have any downtime till now.

I have my tiny instance that currently has 4 users, with me being the most active. I update Lemmy regularly, upgrade and manage resources as needed, and even do server management via my phone when I need to. Federated with all of the big ones so there’s no lack in content and I’m always scouring for new communities to sub to. The only rule I have (aside from the ones stated in the rules page) is no NSFW. It’s mostly a CYA measure for myself.

Plus it has a fun URL!

Tried lemmy.world and lemmy.one but they were both down frequently last week. Bounced to lemm.ee and it’s been great so far. The admin is knowledgeable and cares about hosting.

DDOS attacks have been hitting fediverse sights. LW is combating it. Once they lock it down the DDOS attacks will turn to the smaller servers.

If only lemmy.world would invest into something like stormwall, ddos-guard or nexuspipe. Cloudflare is complete dogshit against most modern ddos attacks (unfortunately).

They really, really are not - from a technical or social lens. I remember an admin coming into a conversation to shut down comments and telling everybody to be nice to the nazis we were dunking on, or else.

They’re Spez - cryptofascists posing as liberals to create a captive audience they can push into the right wing pipeline.

Everyone should support small instances. It would be horrible if the entire lemmy network consists of like 10 large instances. And if people don’t use the small instances, that will probably happen after a year or two.

Support all the people who has an instance and wants to contribute to the Lemmy network.

Go sign up right now, if only to have an alternate account when needed.

We need a basic set of criteria to vet new small instances as minimally viable, what are they?

    Just spitballing a few…

    • At least federated with large instances X, Y and Z…
    • X or above uptime percentage
    • no more than X ratio of users to posts
    • clearly stated content standards and a functional nazi/fascist/misinformation moderation effort

What do you think the list should be?

At first glace, sure, but when you look into it deeper it’s a cowardly move. For one, Hexbear made it perfectly clear they expect their users to abide by the rules of the instances they visit and not cause trouble. Also,

“Defederation should only be considered as a last resort . . . We made the decision to preemptively defederate”

Along with their stated goal to (emphasis mine)

Provide a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for all members; regardless of gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, personal appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, political affiliation, or other similar characteristic. Human comes first.

Not to mention how long they dragged their heels defederating from the fascists at exploding heads yet are preemptively defederating from hexbear. And to top it all off there’s loads of comments calling hexbear users “Russian bot farms” and “a cesspool for genocidal lunatics.” The whole thing is ignorant as hell.

On the other hand it was enough to convince me to switch away from lemmy.world, so there’s that.

For one, Hexbear made it perfectly clear they expect their users to abide by the rules of the instances they visit and not cause trouble.

The users at Hexbear made it perfectly clear in the discussions about federation that they weren’t going to respect that request and were openly encouraging each other to brigade other instances. They seem to have quite a number of participants who were really looking forward to being able to “bully the libs” and a quick scan showed several comments about sending offensive DMs to users of other instances. I was also able to find multiple HB users who openly admitted to already being banned multiple times from beehaw for trollish community breaking behavior.

The idea that BH users would have been well behaved is wishful thinking as they’ve already shown the Fediverse how they behave. Their instance Admins and Users are also not shy with how they are approaching Federation. They very specifically want the freedom to participate in other instances without those instances being able to engage them. Put together they want the freedom to “own the libs” all across the Fediverse without having those same libs show up in their carefully crafted safe space. They want to eat their cake and have it too.

To be clear I don’t agree with how Lemmy.World handled the blocking of Hexbear. I would strongly have preferred community engagement on the issue prior to the block but looking at the Troll Army being formed at HB I can’t necessarily fault the admins of LW either. Dealing with ideologically motivated extremists is a lot of work that no one wants to do.

                Source: trust me bro.

and a quick scan showed several comments about sending offensive DMs to users of other instances

I’ve looked through several Hexbear threads and I haven’t seen a single indication of this. The most common sentiment I’m seeing is “fuck 'em, we’re better off without them.” Link me these alleged comments, please.

The idea that BH users would have been well behaved is wishful thinking as they’ve already shown the Fediverse how they behave.

Frankly lemmy.world users have shown themselves to be considerably worse, straight up making shit up and calling Hexbear users “Russian bot farms” and “a cesspool for genocidal lunatics." All the incivility is coming from the frothing-at-the-mouth libs who can’t stand that other people might have genuine anti-imperialist views.

                ideologically motivated extremists

“Extremists” lmao. The nerve of you calling HB a “troll army” after posting all these completely unsubstantiated lies.
