The best troll would be to just openly allow actual direct link piracy on /r/piracy. if reddit bans /r/piracy, then it functionally re-privates the sub (the thing they wanted to avoid). And if they allow it, then it’s a bastion of actual piracy. win-win!

Problem is, if it’s privated or open, they can still point users to this community

Not possible if it’s banned; another would probably take its place

The bootlicking on that post (in a PIRACY sub nonetheless) is wild. Lots of “you don’t understand, Reddit is a COMPANY! 😭” I’ve peeked in on Reddit a bit and I’ve been seeing those kinds of “won’t somebody think of the shaaaareholdersss and adminss” comments on a few posts related to the protest. Things like this insightful little nugget:

“Seems all the reddit hate is based solely on reddit doing something similar to twitter, and I’m supposed to be upset cause “Elon man bad”? Tons of APIs cost money to use… build your own platform that freely allows everyone to scrape all “your” content, lead by example please…”

I wonder how many of those are Reddit employees and bots? They can’t all be u/spez alts, can they?

Oh and this is fun too, did you know that we’re all liTeRaLlY extremists over here?

“Lemmy is very far-left. They are literally extremists, I’ll not be part of that shit.”

Guess Reddit is going to be taken over by alt-right trolls too.

Edit: Still figuring out how the formatting works over here.

Haha, that worked for Fox News in the USA.

Lots of “you don’t understand, Reddit is a COMPANY!

That’s the problem, corporate interest. We’d all be better served by a community open source platform like the Fediverse, politics aside.

About the politics, that’s worth reading from the developers:

On another topic, there are rumors circulating that we are fascists or supported genocide. These claims are completely false, and like most viral twitter threads, are coming from a single Mastodon user on a personal vendetta who didn’t provide any sources. Such slander doesn’t deserve any response and is best left ignored. If you want to know the truth then read the following pages (both from 2021):

        History of Lemmy

        What is lemmy.ml

As you can see we are not a faceless corporation that is accomodating to everyone. We are individuals with our own opinions. If you disagree with these, it is no problem! You can still freely use the Lemmy software on different instances. If you host your own instance, we have no control over it at all and are unable to censor what users say. For more details read the documentation on censorship resistance. In practice, the instance list already contains various instances whose content would be banned from lemmy.ml immediately.

Across reddit a lot of astroturfing is going on - its not all real users. Lots of sheep out there, only takes a few shills to steer them in the desired direction by creating the appearance of a majority.

Its the same culture that causes people to type out a post, but then delete it for fear of the reaction for sharing an opinion. Thats something that doesn’t seem to happen with Lemmy and I hope the mass of reddit users migrating doesn’t bring that with them.

I agree with all of this. I definitely think at least some of them are astroturfing. The mods from r/adviceanimals got kicked and ever since then, they mostly post memes that say things like “the official app isn’t so bad, you guys!” We all know u/spez isn’t above editing comments for petty reasons and since he got caught, I’m sure he’s more careful about not getting caught editing things to suit him now. I wonder if the voting system is rigged, too, at least in some subs.

It’s already going down that road. Many of the subreddits have already become either a strongly neoliberal (r/news, r/politics, r/whitepeopletwitter) or strongly neoconservative (r/libertarian, r/guns) echo chamber courtesy of dogpiling, astroturfing, and mod replacements.

I see that the trolls I was talking about are managing to find their way to Lemmy. They never have any actual insightful things to say, it’s just reducing your arguments to the most simplified version and repeating them back in a childish condescending way. It’s almost like…that’s not all the protest is about? Not sure if these are just kids trying to be edgy, or if they’re working for Reddit, or if they’re just u/spez being petty. I try to be an empathetic person, but I have a really hard time understanding thinking it’s fun to belittle people for caring about things. It’s such a waste of energy. If you need attention, learn a skill and impress people with it, I assure you it’s a much more fulfilling way to get people to notice you. I hope these people can get the emotional support they need someday.

Would like a way to keep track of communities on the phone. Right now I’m stuck to using browser, since didn’t like the apps for lemmy too much yet.

Kbin is actually less than 6 months old on the public side and I’m sure mobile apps are on the forecast. I know there is an app in the works already too. Even lemmy is a little young in public use so any mobile apps are not as polished.

The apps being built are by others offering their time for the greater use of the fediverse.

@DarkTides yeah! they both work with activitypub!

I don’t follow any groups/magazines/whatever directly from mastodon (because they’d clog my feed).

However, you can copy the post or comment links, paste them into the search bar in mastodon, and then boost/favourite/reply :)

It’s a little bit awkward, but you get used to it.

Favourite in mastodon turns into an upvote on the lemmy/kbin side. Boost doesn’t really do much on lemmy/kbin (yet) but does increase reach on the mastodon side as it always does.

And replies, naturally, show up as you’d expect :)

This is my first time linking to Lemmy from Lemmy. Hopefully, that works.

Edit: Cool. old.reddit link syntax works, too.

TL;DR: They demodded OP, the founder (I think?), of /r/piracy to force them to reopen. This shows that Reddit thinks it’s very important for users to have access to piracy information and a place to discuss piracy on the platform.

This is tacit support for posting piracy on Reddit, and, really, the only reason not to list direct link to pirated content is now gone since the threat of taking the sub private is what “we” want anyway. I suppose you could also get your account banned from Reddit, too.

I’m not a lawyer, but I wonder about legal challenges this opens Reddit to. It would be amazing if Disney now sued Reddit for encouraging piracy of their content. You can definitely trust Disney to be lawsuit happy assholes, right? I’d get a lot of shadenfreud from that.
