A whole new video game for Commander is kind of interesting, but if it doesn’t tie in directly with your Arena collection I think its kind of a non-starter. Also, it feels like that will yet again fragment the community even more. Arena seems to have already killed off in-person Standard, I can’t imagine it is going to help store events if they make Commander a digital game.
How many different ways can they sell us the exact same card before players just get fed up? If I want to (digitally) play Modern I have to buy the card on MODO, if I want to play Historic I have to buy it on Arena, and if I want to play Commander I have to buy it a third time? This is their master strategy?
And a 4th time if you want to play with the physical cards in person.
At this point I cannot wait for in person magic to collapse so I can let my shop close. I just hope it happens near the end of my lease and not directly after renewal.
That’s just so sad though. It seems like Wizards just doesn’t want paper constructed 60 card formats to exist.
Why bother with all the costs of manufacturing and shipping and designing physical cards when you can just sell people ai generated jpgs over and over for the same price. Its money for nothing!
I’m not going to think of Magic as a canvas no matter how many times some suit at Hasbro who probably doesn’t even play the game tells me I should.
How to: bulldoze Magic’s own identity for profit
“Hasbro hopes these sets will bring in new and lapsed players” what they really want is target a different audience for each released UB who will buy just this particular set. The question is what happens when you run out of popular IPs to print. Do you just cycle back to Marvel every 3 years?
what happens when you run out of popular IPs to print
I don’t really think this is a realistic concern for them.
Probably exactly what will happen-- Hasbro will nominate an ‘evergreen’ IP to return to during stale times, and in 20 years, there’ll be more capes than planeswalkers roaming the in-game world. Magic’s identity swirling down the same drain Hunt: Showdown’s is (I mean hey, at least you don’t have Post fucking Malone as a Planeswalker or Legendary Human yet).
@mike They have a more collectable version of a digital mtg client: MTGO…
Die Hasbro die.
