I had an idiot GP diagnose me with social phobia and put me on Zoloft for years. The lazy bastard never made any attempt to adjust the dosage or to find out if the stuff actually worked. During that time I went through a rough and depressive period. My girlfriend blames the pills but a real licensed psychiatrist I saw years later claims that the dose was too small to do much and that I could have avoided these couple of months of my life where just getting out of bed felt like an insurmountable task.
Eventually the GP stopped responding when I called to have my prescription renewed. Sick of their bullshit I decided to stop taking the pills with a very short tapering period. It was probably not the safest thing to do but besides being a little dizzy for a couple of days I felt no difference.
Years later the aforementioned real psychiatrist diagnosed me with avoidant personality disorder and ADHD and prescribe me ritalin. That stuff actually works and helps me function in daily life, unlike the Zoloft.
The moral of the story is to make sure the person prescribing you the stuff knows what the fuck they’re doing and that the effects of the medication is being monitored by qualified professionals.
