One of my big gripes with the manga subreddit was the focus on constant character objectification. It’s fine if you like that, but there were always tons oneshots and fan-art that were basically porn, instead of focusing on an interesting story.
Do you think things will be different this time? Do you want them to be?
If the community grows to a size as large as the manga subreddit, my guess is that it’ll take on similar characteristics - that’s the nature of manga in its current state and culture. It’ll only be different if conscious effort is put in to moderate the content and direction of discussions that take place here.
I suppose the good thing here is that it’s like we’re starting on a clean slate, and we can actually steer this instance in the direction we want it to go, at least for now.
It’s upsetting that the subs for media as broad as television and books and movies can hold substantial discussions and for the most part feel like a proper forum, while r/manga just made me feel like I was perpetually stuck in some corner of a sleazy bookstore dedicated to horny boys and men.
That’s not to say that there weren’t good conversations and recommendations to be found. I spent a good bunch of my time on that sub because the hidden gems were worth digging through the dirt to find. I’m just hoping the things I see and read here will be more palatable.
Generally I lean personally towards that kind of stuff, but it does tend to over perform, I think an idea solution would be something like.

Tags for this sort of stuff, like erotic/one shot

By default they are filtered out, and are opt-in.
It’s important to make it opt in so that people who filter out ecchi don’t end up in a ghost town.
I love this idea. I was one of the ones that couldn’t stand the low-effort, fanbox bait. It was essentially 1-4 panels of vague story, with some kind of mental illness. With a link to the porn version. Would be super happy with an opt-in model.

I’m hoping there will be a bigger focus on discussions of new chapters. Personally I’d love a rule where each ‘chapter’ that is posted must be at least, say, 5 pages, because I’m tired of those 2-page Twitter comics. I’m hoping that would be enough to prevent at least some of horniness.
A tag for “mini-manga” would be nice, but I definitely don’t think it should be completely removed.
I know I know, I have a personal distaste for them. I’m just a little tired of seeing that “tsun-derederederederederederederedere girl” doing nothing of consequence for years.
No! My favourite manga (The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All) has 4 pages per chapter and it isn’t horny bait at all.
I’m okay with the short twitter manga, but I hope they are labeled.
B-but my whyfoo! She’s 120% better than yours! Look at her, so qt!!!1one Also here’s some fan art of her, showing almost everything and a bit more. Check the comments for a link to a dojin with a self-insert that I did, totally not me! /joke
Serious now. It depends a lot on how the comm is moderated, as well as the type of people who settle in. In general people in the Fediverse seems to be a bit more mature and well-adjusted than in Reddit, so there’s a good chance that they’ll discourage the almost-porn.
Plus this community being hosted in a SFW instance helps - the hornier folks will be probably at lemmynsfw.com or a similar instance, not here.
I do like some eroticism, mind you, but… come on there’s a time and place for that.
Honestly, it’s not just the community, but it’s also what is currently being published and translated. A lot of popular manga, rightly or wrongly, is targeted towards men, and the lewd stuff is popular. The twitter manga that teases and promises more on fanbox, that stuff sells. It’s relatively low-effort and easy to generate revenue. People are interested in that stuff.
I’m personally alright seeing that stuff, but I’d like to see it more clearly labeled so it can be skipped or filtered.
