Hello all,

After experiencing some trouble setting up my own Beeper instance I finally managed to have everything configured. I am currently using the Signal and Whatsapp bridge which I use to communicate with my friends and family. I use the Element app on Windows and iOS to reach the server, but now syncing is done the app only shows either the phone numbers or configured Whatsapp names if people are ‘sharing’ those, depending on their Whatsapp privacy setting. It makes communicating with people more difficult.

Is there a way to have it show the full names like configured on my contacts? It’s like this on Whatsapp Web, which it used to bridge I think?

IIRC there is a way to do this in the settings of mautrix whatsapp, if that’s what you are using.

However, it should only be used if you will be the only user to ever use this server. This is because the puppet accounts will be used for everyone, so if a given whatsapp user is in the contacts of multiple users on your server, and is also in a group chat with both of you, that user would now have two names. One from your contact list, one from the other users contact list. This will cause problems. A user cannot have a different display name depending on who they chat with.

Thank you, I will look into this! I am hosting Beeper just for myself so this should be ok.

You sound like an advertiser… the platform you’re sharing is not even self hosted.
