I have a custom domain that I use for email aliasing. The problem with it is if I do not create an actual mailbox I cannot reply from it.
I have my business domain and email through it handled by proton which allows me to create an alias mailbox and I can reply from that even after the fact of receiving an email.
I have been meaning to look into an alternative for my personal email aliasing.
simplelogin should be able to do that. you can selfhost it or pay for it to handle custom domains
In my opinion, email aliasing is the best tool when you share a domain name with a bunch of other people. The more, the merrier!
Hosting a custom domain is cool and all, but unless you share it with friends, two data breaches could tie your accounts together if somebody was reasonably competent about identifying domains that aren’t typically associated with email hosting.
i agree, and so I tend to prefer a mix of aliases on a custom domain (to give out in person) and shared domains for signing up to webpages. This does unfortunately come with the fact that many websites will block these domains, which make it a lot harder to work with :(
