God I’ve been on the fence of leaving Plex for a while. I was just thinking this week “what features have they actually delivered in the last 2 years?”
None. I couldn’t think of any. Skip Credits was the last one, and that was just over 2 years ago, and it was a pro only feature. Everything else has been for their streaming, and now not only have they not delivered anything of value but the last two announcements are removing functionality. This and the Tidal integrations are both dead.
So I set up jellyfin again, a process that last time I was annoyed with, and found that the UI has gotten much better, and it’s pretty much at feature parity now.
I’m not switching today, but I am doing a full trial run. Not because I want to, but because what is keeping me on Plex?

Did they ever get it functional? I tried it a few times early on and it was terrible.
I use it a lot, it’s has its glitches but it’s certainly been functional, at least for me lol

Yes, but not in most clients.
Serious question - what’s your reason for using? I can understand long distance relationship, but outside of that I don’t get this as anything more than an edge case feature (post-COVID).
Genuinely curious - anykind of feature removal sucks, but just wondering how people use this now.
Oh I have friends and family littered all over the country that I keep in regular contact with. We will do watch parties for series as new episodes air, or just decide to watch something together on a whim.
If it’s just me and one other person, we may hop on a video call and talk about it as it plays.
It’s just kind of nice having everyone be on the same page.
I know a truck driver who watches stuff with his family occasionally using a feature like this (don’t know if it’s Plex or some similar offering elsewhere).
My wife has a friend that moved away a few years ago. We set aside one day a month to watch really bad movies, MST3K style, with them online. This feature keeps us in sync so that we are watching the same thing at the same time. Without it, that becomes a lot harder, especially when you throw in things like pausing for bathroom breaks.
Similar to long distance, I used it with my wife while I was COVID isolating.
I imagine there are Watch Together plugins available for Plex that should fill this space pretty easily.
