Virtual influencer Mori Calliope performed a sold-out show at the Hollywood Palladium in February.
These influencers, also known as VTubers, appear as digital avatars and are gaining popularity.
I went to the concert. It was unlike anything I’ve seen before.
TBH, the whole “virtual idol” and “virtual avatar” thing predated not only Kizuna Ai, but also YouTube, with me first finding one through forums, and said virtual avatar was part of a “manga style webcomic-formatted blog”, and apparently Japan already had some virtual idols at that time, allegedly even before the internet boom. It’s just the “influencer” term is quite dehumanizing IMHO.
