I don’t think that this should be a surprise for anyone. Not even Musk himself - I’m led to believe that he knew what he was doing, and the consequences, it’s just that he simply doesn’t care.

Yep. It was a vanity acquisition, and a vanity name change. Consequences mean nothing, to him, it is simply the new shiny toy of the week, that he will slowly destroy for his own amusement, until the next new shiny toy comes along.

It could, but what would be the motivation to do so?

Some people on Lemmy and the old site suspect that he’s trying to tank it to shut down Left comms. I don’t. I think he’s simply inept.

It doesn’t sound likely for me, either. There would be more effective approaches to shut down left wing Twitter posters, through selective enforcement of the rules - like this:

(I made this infographic a long time ago. Surprised how it’s relevant now.)

If you liked that infographic (about “from the top” meddling) I got another, dealing with “internal” circlejerk formation instead:

I believe that both processes can and do happen side-by-side, synergistically.

I’d be more inclined to think it was some kind of scam, kind of like insurance fraud.

I’ll preface this by saying I think he’s just incompetent. But possible less incompetent answers could be: It’s some kind of tax dodge, can use it as a write off. Alternatively he knows it’s never going to turn a profit so to minimise his losses he’s trying to kill it quickly rather than having it as an albatross around his neck for years to come.

You don’t say? I am shocked, I was sure this would work out well for them, just like it worked for Meta.
