When the investigators got his laptop and phone to look at, it seemed that he was quite casual in his planning. In fact the absolute last thing in his history he looked at before he went off to try to do what he did was porn.
You would think that he was a smart guy to actually get around the secret service. But it was entirely dumb luck. He did use a drone to survey the location before hand, which was unprecedented and smart, but that was it.
