I have a turbolib neighbor whom I’ve never met, but since they’re flag enthusiasts with what must be an insane vexillology budget I use them to figure out which way the wind is blowing (as it were). It took them weeks after Biden dropped out to remove their “BIDEN / HARRIS 2024” banner, but their hand-painted blue-and-yellow “STOP THE WAR” sign has never wavered, except after storms, when it sometimes takes them a few days to notice it’s become askew.
Anyway, since Biden has dropped out their flags have come and gone fairly quickly. There was a donkey, a more straightforward Harris/Walz flag, and another Ukrainian flag. Since the election they had a week or two with a Mexican flag, before moving on to an upside-down American one and another with an illegible message. March Madness must have meant they wanted to (briefly) support their favorite college team, but that team must have lost because now we have another Ukrainian flag up top and, finally, for the first time, a Palestinian flag flying beneath it.
I happened upon this while on my way to the library to pick up this book, which I guess has already been proven partially correct.
The libs around me have all of a sudden realized what Isreal is doing is wrong, but they still won’t call it a genocide. They also like to deflect to the Russo-Ukrainian war, saying things like “The Israelis are sexually assaulting women and using human shields, just like Putin is doing!”
They recognize Palestine is in the right, but they don’t want to disavow Isreal or acknowledge Hamas. I think deep down they know the US and its allies are evil who do evil shit. They just don’t want to say it out loud because it would mean they’re complicit.
I’ve come across a few people who think that not liking Netanyahu is a meaningful nuance, as if the occupation was somehow humane and lawful under Ehud Barak or something.
Can’t wait until we ban flags
Looks like Utah is starting with pride flags
That sucks. Was thinking about the white blue and yellow burned into my retinas.
I also think about this a lot, at least I hope that some of them will recognize the fact that we were right all along while they were busy eating up propaganda slop and have that spark a flame in them politically, though most of them won’t even realize that they had the exact opposite opinion before “they were always against this”
A family member begrudgingly became okay with the war in Iraq after Colin Powell’s UN speech, so any time they betray any faith in the U.S. State Department’s opinions or warnings I remind them of that. Fortunately they admit having said that at the time - I figure most people prefer to suppress memories of swallowing outright lies.
Damn, and I have been hemming and hawing on buying a single city flag.
I’ve never been to Idaho but this (retired, sadly) is the only city flag I recognize. Sorry, Chicago.
Wow the copyright notice really sells it. Terminal capitalist brain.
