I can think of a few immediate benefits of this sort of protest and some potential benefits.
Mainly this shows the populace they aren’t alone, or taking crazy pills, or in some kind of Twilight Zone. The media easily makes it seem like these strong views, anti Trump, anti Musk, anti DOGE, pro Luigi, etc… are extremist or minority, or maybe that believe have some gentle disagreement with Trump but nothing major. That can make people feel hopeless and like there’s no chance at things getting better, which discourages people from actually doing things to make things better. So this immediately provides some comfort and sanity to people, but it lays the groundwork to motivate people to do something more serious. Remember way back when the Tea Party movement was still considered fringe and extreme? Initially all that stuff was just protesting, all the way back to the Obama presidency. But in hindsight we can see how that laid the groundwork to embolden more serious action later which is at last coming to fruition for that movement. It’s a long process, very similar to gardening, hence those phrases about “sowing the seeds of XYZ”. For a long time the plant is completely non-functional, and then suddenly it abruptly bears fruit. But it does take continual prolonged watering.
I hope this is “we’re asking nicely” and a final warning to billionaires and the ruling class.
I’ve seen many of these massive protests throughout my life so I’m itching to just get to the part where we toss them out of their homes and light it up. They’ve gotten a million warnings.
Fair. However, I think what’s happening, or at least what I’m seeing a lot are people assuming- is that an uprising, or any from of act of revolution for that matter- would be met in the way it carried out in the past.
I don’t think any ground will be moved by dumping tea into a harbor, or setting barns on fire this time.
There now exist things like tactical missiles and satellite guided ordinances. I don’t think I’ll go down the way we have understood it to on the past.
And don’t misinterpret this to mean that I don’t wish the same thing, or agree- it’s just that when the idea is pressed against a more realistic modern day set of circumstances, I really don’t think it will play out the same as it once did.
It won’t be the “final” warning, but we have reached the beginning of the end. The path ahead will not be smooth, and will likely get very, very ugly, but the bad guys never really win. Sooner or later they are all brought down, and it’s usually extremely unpleasant for them.
You got an answer from another user here 5 hours ago. Why are you even here if you are skeptical of protesting in the first place? It’s kind of the whole point this community exists. Did you get lost?
Protests attract more people to your side, and each demonstration gets bigger. Politicians, especially conservative politicians, are cowards. They will start to get scared, and will react, positive and negative, but it will only hurt them, no matter what they do. More people will shift sides, or at least fall away from the dark side.
Experts say that it only takes about 3.5% of the population to hit a “tipping point,” and become a trend that changes society. The high estimates for these demonstrations was about 5 million. 3.5% of our population of 335 million is about 12 million, so we are well on the way of reaching a tipping point.
Wait until the tariffed products from China hit the stores, and prices literally double in Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy, etc. He was elected to bring Biden’s prices down, not double them. Protest numbers will grow enormously over this summer.
At some point, Luigi’s trial will happen, and add another vector for protest.
Large protests like this have been going on forever, all over the world, for one reason - they work.
Can anyone explain the purpose of these? I can’t remember republicans and trump in particular caring about what people and protesters think.
Democrats respond to protests but republicans don’t. What was the expressed goal of this protest?

I asked the same thing elsewhere, and was given a wonderful answer:
In short; this isn’t for them. It’s for us.

I’ve been getting real tired of a number of Lemmy posters complaining about Americans doing nothing and then shitting on anything we do.
I have a feeling this is only going to get more common as the movement grows. Especially since now we are getting a (little) bit of MSM coverage.
The haterz are useful idiots
Fucking bootlickers are the worst enemies of progress
“Get out of here you, this is an echo chamber!”
lol yup, definitely a troll. Nothing to see here, move along folks.
