I’ve been following this forum for several years and have seen many discussions about base weight, ultralight vs. light, and of course, the magical 10 lbs (4.5 kg).
Consistently, the #1 concern about cutting weight further is comfort. Will I be uncomfortable if I do this? A few recent quotes:
I don’t NEED to get under 10 pounds […] but I’d like to be as comfortable as possible.
Suggesting [insert UL suggestion] is quite representative of poor advice along the lines of “have you considered being uncomfortable?”
On the other side are folks suggesting these concerns are overblown. For example:
The worst of it is the “I’ve never tried [UL option], but you shouldn’t try it because [assumptions and unexperienced conjecture].”
They also argue that overemphasizing comfort in camp often comes at the cost of a lighter (and therefore more comfortable) hike.
The debate usually centers around choices like:
- Tarps instead of tents
- Frameless backpacks
- Smaller sleeping pads
- CCF pads
- Minimizing clothing
So, here’s what it boils down to: Are we too concerned about comfort? Can you go UL (<10 lbs) and still be comfortable?
