For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is The Sacrifice (1986), a Swedish psychological drama from one of the USSR’s most renowned filmmakers, Andrei Tarkovsky. A Swedish writer celebrates his birthday with his friends and family, but uh-oh, nuclear war is starting. A whole lot of existential angst follows, in Tarkovsky’s usual meditative style. This is considered one of the best films of all time, being currently ranked #156 on the Letterboxd Top 250. We watched Nostalgia (1983) last week, so we may as well watch this one too.

After that is Moonstruck (1987), a rom-com about a woman in her late 30s (Cher) who feels that time is running out for her to find a husband, so she agrees to marry her mediocre boyfriend, only to become infatuated with his younger brother (Nicolas Cage), who starts pursuing her. Uh-oh, the brothers hate each other, too, because Nic Cage’s character is an amputee who blames his bro for the loss of his hand. Hilarity ensues as the usual romantic mix-ups escalate. Director is Norman Jewison, the guy behind In the Heat of the Night (1967), The Russians Are Coming The Russians are Coming (1966), Fiddler on the Roof (1971), and Jesus Christ Superstar (1972). This was nominated for several Oscars, including Best Picture, and was one of the top-grossing films of 1987 at the domestic box office. Let’s check it out.
