    Yeah, it’s a reaction to the British navy’s practice of kidnapping people and forcing them them to serve on dangerous boats under horrible conditions with like two or three years life expectancy all to defend slavery and colonialism. Many pirates during the golden age were freed slaves or navy mutineers. Many crews were egalitarian and democratic. Disney doesn’t quite capture that aspect.

      On the democratic aspect: IIRC “the pirate code” was real, it was basically a contract everyone had input on and had to be unanimously approved. Also, the pirate captain is not a dictator like naval captains were, if a majority of the crew hated the captain they could vote them out (or worse), so it was in the captain’s interest to keep everyone happy mainly by fairly dividing the goods that were plundered.
