My Dinner with Andre is a movie about a man named Wally having dinner with a man named Andre.

Andre has recently returned from traveling the world. He went to the Sahara, Polish forests, an ecological commune in Scotland.

Wally lives a more “simple” life and likes life’s small pleasures like a cup of coffee.

The joke in this comic is that the man is having dinner with someone named “Andy” instead, who throws food instead of having intellectual conversation about ecological communes.

            someone named “Andy” instead

The comic left me wondering if this is Andy as in “Andy Kaufman.”

I wondered the exact same thing, but I came to the conclusion that there isn’t anything about the drawing that indicates it’s Andy Kaufman.

If you’re curious, here was my thought process.

It doesn’t look like him very much (Andy Kaufman was tall and lanky, his nose wasn’t long, his feet definitely touched the floor in a chair), I don’t remember him being famous for throwing food, and there are many ways to indicate it was him. Hairstyle, outfit, props (his Mighty Mouse routine was iconic).

I think ultimately Andy is just perceived more as a childish name than Andre.

In The Office, Andrew Bernard comes back from anger management class and wants to be called “Drew” because it feels more mature to him than “Andy.”

I don’t know his work or characters that well, outside of what they showed in the Jim Carrey biopic (and the R.E.M. song, haha) , so I appreciate your analysis here!
