Except that in American private prisons it’s perfectly legal to force someone to manufacture goods for sale without paying them. Slavery was banned in the USA… except in prison.

In related news, the USA incarcerates a huge proportion of its population compared to other countries, and the incarceration rate for black men is disproportionately high.

Its a lot deeper than that. Living under capitalism means you dont eat if you dont work. Working is enforced by threat of violence. Literally all us except the rich are slaves

I get that, but it feels like you’re minimising the perpetuation of actual slavery in the USA by the private prison industry and by biased and unfair sentencing.

A lot of the black guys in prison are there for extraordinarily long sentences for extremely minor offences like smoking weed or stealing food from the supermarket, they don’t have freedom, they don’t gave a family life, all they have is working for the profit of the prison and awful accommodation.

You or I on the outside have at least some freedom to go where we like and be with who we like outside working hours, and might even be able to switch to another job. Not so if you’re incarcerated.

Oh yeah no i didnt mean to come off that way. 100% people in provate prisons have it way worse. Like, i have no clue how it is legal to pay someone 30 cents an hour for forced labor. Its… surprising to me that anyone lets themselves get arrested alive.
