I think it is better to invest in solar panels and generate enough electricity on our own. But looks like for a grid connected solar we need to pay quite high charges per KW to Bescom. If too many people start using solar to escape high tariffs, these guys might increase those per KW charges to make up the shortfall. Hopefully off grid ones become cheaper in the next few years.

Off grid needs batteries and uses power from the batteries in the night. Whereas in on-grid, excess power is given to bescom at a rate fixed by them. We draw from the grid during nights and in mornings we sell excess power to them. We will be charged for the use of ongrid infra on a per kw basis. Our power bill will be out consumption + fixed infra use charges - power supplied to bescom. But off grid has very high initial investment due to batter cost. Easily two to three lakhs more.
