The current president (A democrat named Joe Biden, btw) issued an executive order which forgave student debt. Republicans fought tooth and nail to make sure payments would resume, and took it to the Supreme Court. Based on the oral arguments made by the Supreme Court judges thus far, Republican appointed judges are expected to vote to overturn the Biden debt relief program.
