I’m illogically fearful to try using the nouveau driver. I don’t have a 50 series nvidia gpu, but if I did things like this make me afraid to stick with nvidia for the future, even if progress is being made.

How well do old games work in the Nouveau driver? Is the performance loss mostly in the GPU compute, or in the CPU overhead?
