Governments as grocers isn’t a new idea, but has received more attention with New York’s new mayor promising a pilot program and it appearing on the platform of a federal NDP leadership candidate.
I always looked at their margins and thought people were crazy to assume a government funded monopoly could be any cheaper.
What I failed to see was the real estate monopoly, like our housing market extortionate land use policies are how it maintains its oligopolistic position, and what drives up food prices. No different than the housing crisis the way a government becomes a solution is overriding municipal zoning laws, as they do with social housing.
Why doesnt the government just withhold federal funding for municipals with regressive zoning laws, instead of throwing money into an easily identifiable cause.
