In July, 16-year-old Michael Schuls died of “traumatic asphyxia,” according to the local coroner’s office, two days after he became trapped on a conveyor for freshly cut stacks of lumber while working at Florence Hardwoods, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported. His funeral was attended by “hundreds” of people, according to a GoFundMe that was set up to support his family.

A report from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, obtained by the Press-Gazette, said Schuls had been left alone on the job and was seen on video trying to “straighten out the wood” on the conveyor, where he became trapped. He was discovered 17 minutes later.

This isn’t even an issue of being a child. Even an adult shouldn’t left alone in a dangerous area. It’s how people are killed.

3 other kids 15-16 where injured at that place this year alone, and that’s just the kids! Adults are probably being injured in that death trap of a mill regularly as well since they likely out number the children.

Don’t get my wrong. Children shouldn’t be allowed equipment like this but adults shouldn’t ge left alone. If I’m reading it right, had someone been there, he would have survived.

So they are not going to address the blatant safety issue where they don’t safely operate dangerous machinery. Isn’t that covered in OSHA?

Woah, there buddy. This is America. Best we can do is a 3 figure fine for a dead kid. Can’t have it possibly effect the profits of a corporation in any meaningful way.

Their insurance company probably dropped them, and they probably can’t get a new policy unless they make some changes. This was probably the least expensive change they could make :(

Whew that’s a pretty rough judgement handed down to them. I hope they can get by just letting 18+ people risk their lives there.
