First of all, all of these eye computers are dumb, but at least Meta’s Ray Bans look more or less like normal glasses. Even Google Glass was sleeker looking than these, and that was 13 years ago. I don’t know what Snap is thinking.
Google Glass didn’t need to put nearly as much tech and power into their glasses as Snap has here. This is a full standalone headset with actual AR capabilities. It isn’t just some shitty HUD and a camera.
As with all tech, the early iterations have to make tons of compromises. Different companies are trying different things. These already look miles better than the earlier dev kits that they released.
I don’t think that Snap is expecting normal people to buy and actually wear these around in their day to day. They’re still very much a niche tech item that has some potential in specific applications, but it’s actually a pretty neat piece of tech. I think people making fun of how they look are missing the point (and they were never Snap’s audience to begin with).
That’s totally reasonable I only brought up Google Glass because it was famously ridiculed (“Glassholes”) and yet still more fashionable even today than these things.
Nobody dared to tell the emperor that he was nude.
Same as with Meta and their ridiculous Metaverse. Call it toxic positivity, call it fear of top management (who can snip with a finger to fire and blacklist you), whatever the reason is, decision makers at these companies are out of touch. Same with AI these days.
