Hey, I just watched those episodes recently! The thing that kills me about the smiley face scene is that Data discovers that time is not standing still. Data notes that it’s a warp core breach, which occurs so rapidly that the expansion is noticeable to him despite extreme time dilation. That would mean that the warp fog would be 1000s of degrees, even at their time scale. Picard should have gotten 3rd degree burns on his hand

Heat transfers as a function of time, not instantly. So Picard actually could get away with this as long as he doesn’t leave his fingers in there for too long.

Even beyond that is the concept that heat is proportional to the speed of the molecules in the substance. So in this case, from Picard’s frame of reference, it might not be hot at all.

Then there’s the whole idea of them being wrapped in a skin tight time dilation field (so does his hand even actually make contact?) and… let’s just chalk it up to artistic licence from the writers.

If you want to get technical, how would they even be able to breathe? Wouldn’t the air near them not move anywhere and they’d suffocate? How are they moving through air that’s in a different state of time?

          Eh… whatever, a Q did it.

This train of thought could only come from a true dork and I now hold the highest respect for you 🫡

One of my favorite scenes in that episode is when they’re on the bridge and Geordie or Data says the controls don’t work, and then Picard walks around to the back of the arch and starts using the controls as the literal next thing to happen in the scene. Also Picard with press on nails.
