Earth is ambivalent to our existence. We upset the balance with pollution, deforestation, overpopulation, over-consumption.

Memes like this just serve to make us feel less responsibility for our collective damage. The planet exists in harmony with things that sing along with it. We are like an out of tune banjo and a harpsicord trying to help the Boston philharmonic.

Every blade of grass on Earth could secretly be harbouring ticks that can give you a crippling illness for life. Some trees hate you so much they’ll give you a nasty rash just for touching them or standing under them when it rains. Your body has a built-in expiry date, planned obsolescence, because the mindless natural process that shaped it doesn’t give a damn about what happens to you after you’ve raised kids (which may take you several attempts because of the special love this world reserves for infants).

Everything nice that humans have we’ve had to fight tooth and nail against the physical realities of the world to get. The planet doesn’t exist in harmony, it exists in a delicate balance of terror as everyone and everything on it struggles to survive and procreate. Upsetting that balance often leads to mutually assured destruction, which is why many people mistake it for harmony, when really it’s just a toxic and violent relationship where all parties involved nonetheless depend on one another. Seeking to transcend this cycle of mindless violence and death is more than logical for any moral being.

Don’t misunderstand my intent, because I fully agree with you. The harmony I mention is the Zen harmony. The Taoist balance. The idea that a poisonous tree is exactly what it’s meant to be. A venomous snake is just snaking through existence. The dance of life and death is natural. Mosquitoes and ticks engorge on blood to feed voracious birds or bats. Beetles exist that literally roll up and collect poop for their babies. We say “ick,” but that’s a palatial creche for those eggs.

It’s only us who ascribe meaning to it errantly. Our egos can’t handle a world that isn’t catering to our every whim.

The world cares naught for our pain and is not here for us. We will lay waste to the earth and it will remain after we’re gone, it will recover in a new way, and we will not even have been a memory.

But, ya know… Be nice and all that.

This really is nice, but I feel like it would’ve hit harder if I wasn’t sick at the moment.

If it were up to earth I’m sure it would prevent our bodies from repairing itself if it could and let us bleed out
