There’s still a lot of work to do before E2EE is implemented into ActivityPub, but I think that’d be a better way of having private conversations compared to the one we’re having on Mastodon where it’s just an exchange of private post that only both users can see.
If this is implemented, I wouldn’t be surprise to see a messaging app that use this E2EE for chatting. Who knows, maybe we’ll be able to have an app that implement supprt for E2EE, Lemmy and Mastodon at the same time.
I uh, really hope it STAYS private posts that only both users can see, just with encryption on top.
Way too many people think it should be some kind of weird bolted-on IM system and like… ugh NO!! the current way it works is better than that!

I am not envisioning an IM system.
I’m envisioning a correctly implemented encryption layer for how DMs currently work (with the caveat that I believe cryptography should never EVER be done in the browser (unless an extension or whatever)).
